It sounds like he was out of society (unemployed) for about 10 months now more cause he has been looking for a job. If it were me, I would emphasize to start that up until his arrest he had been employed since the age of 14, then I would say after that something to the effect that I made a mistake, I was arrested, and I am serving my sentence to society. Then follow up with another positive but what I have learned from the mistakes I have made is invaluable and has taught me how fleeting freedom is. This only gives me the drive to not only never make a mistake like that again, but also appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss this position with you.
I know that the above isn't perfect, but you see I start with a positive, put in the negative stuff about the crime, sentence and all that in the middle and then end with a positive and if one can manage a compliment to the employer. Yes sometimes flattery can be used.
Like the PO said don't sugar coat it but start and end with something positive from it. Then compliment and state again that you are appreciating the opportunity to meet with them about the new opportunity.
Remember this when reading posts.. Just like sales when someone gets bad service or something they tell 9 people.. if they get great service they tell maybe 3.. The same applied when people talk about their experiences... you'll hear a lot more complaining about the bad stuff rather than people like me saying that it isn't so bad...
