Many have jobs they cannot afford to lose so they cannot make too many waves. Many have children or family members that they have to protect so they stay in the background.
I personally cannot blame anyone for wanting to protect their livelihood or their family. Nobody wants their family members harassed---especially their children---and nobody in this economy can afford to attract so much attention that they might lose their job.
Personally, I don't care. I go to meetings, I write, I speak up to anyone that will listen. I am pretty vocal around this area and have even been called "Radical REW," but in a good way. I have enough friends and respect that most people will listen when I talk.
The DA hates me with a passion, but I don't care. Certain members of local law enforcement do not like me, but I simply do not care. I just don't care what people think if I know I am standing up for an honorable cause.
My only family is my son and I and we are guys who can take care of ourselves. I don't have a lot of fear to speak out either.
I have a unique situation, but many registrants are not so lucky.

I am still a newbie here but I am speaking from my own experience. For four months, the best I could do was to go to work, keep bills current, animals alive and the house from falling apart. Some weeks I was successful and some weeks I was not. After that four months, I was able to look beyond the little world I had created while my man is in prison and start to look for other people like me that I could talk to. Eventually, that has led me to join our local RSOL, attend meetings and start writing letters and getting involved.
I completely agree that if all of the families of the 750,000 on the registry got involved we could make a difference. I intend to do whatever I can and encourage others to act as well. One of my favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead: " Never doubt that a small, committed group of people can make a difference; in fact, it's the only thing that ever has."
I would just hesitate to be too rough on those that haven't gotten involved yet. They may be afraid, they may not know yet, they may just still be trying to hold heart and soul together still. Given time and encouragement they will see that they too can make a difference.
"Are all these other family members content to sit by and watch as the country treats our loved ones ..."
And for those who do, I say this:
"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing"
I do not accept the rationalizations and justifications people use to purport just cause to sit idly and watch as others are treated as they are for it is one reason that our county is the way it is. When enough people turn blind eyes, then sooner or later they will come for all the rest of us and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.
