That 2020 date is most likely his projected released date IF he never makes parole or never gets any good time credits.
The 2020 date is if he never receives any good time credits; it is probably the longest they can keep him if he never takes any classes or never receives any time credits for good behavior and never makes parole.
I went to prison in 1992 and they have 2012 as my projected release date, but that did not figure in good time. With my good time, I was released from my 20 year sentence in 2000.
That 2020 date will move up as he is in longer. He is taking a couple of classes, so he will get some good time credit for that.
And of course, the 2020 date does not take into consideration that he might very well parole out before 2020.
Trust me, unless he just gets in a fist fight every day, he will be out much sooner than 2020.

HB, look at it this way---there is no way they can predict with certainty that 2020 will be his release date. They don't have any way of knowing how much good time he will earn, which will move his release date up. So they cannot be certain that the 2020 date is etched in stone.
Also, they have no idea if or when he will make parole, so how could they predict a 2020 date with any assurance?
The answer is that "they can't." So they gave him the 2020 date as the latest possible date he could ever be released. That is the one constant in this entire equation.
