The Greatest Generation - at least that's what Tom Brokaw has labeled them - but they did return from war to work, seek higher education thanks to the GI bill, raise families, and over come all kinds of adversity.
My father passed away eight years ago but my mother is still alive. I have the privelege of spending every Sunday afternoon with her. When I enter the retirement community where she lives - full of people in their 80s and 90s there is one thing that stands out to me - no matter what their situation or their current health status, the people that are doing the best are the ones that have a positive outlook on life - they smile and tell jokes even if they are hurting. Then I see a group of people who are angry, bitter and speak only to complain - sadly their sour disposition only effects their health and situation in a negative way.
I look at all these men and women every Sunday and wonder what they have been through in their lives - have they fought poverty and injustice? Have they lost sons or daughters? Spouses? Have they seen a loved one incarcerated and struggled to make ends meet while supporting them? What other struggles have they faced?
Being with them gives me hope. Yes, there are days when my current situation seems to be the only thing that defines me but I look at them and know that's not true. They are resilient but so are we - their sons and daughters and grandchildren. If they got through all the challenges in their lives, then so will we! (And maybe be able to pass on hope to the next generation as well.)

My father-in-law was a prisoner of war in Germany. Many years ago we met the other survivors of his flight crew and POW experience. I can't even tell you how moving it was to see these octogenarians come together and share their stories with us.
My father and father-in-law were really just ordinary guys with extraordinary stories. They managed to show courage in what seemed to be impossible situations. They, and many like them, are an inspiration to many of us.
Carry on warriors.

My Grandfather didn't land at Normandy, but he did fight in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia with the 97th ID.
Rew, I've been to Guam, Tinian, Rota, and Saipan, and being the amateur WW2 historian I am, I spent a lot of my time exploring the Japanese defenses and I have to bow to anyone who went against them.
