There is no need for such nonsense as this. Inmates, who should know how unfair the criminal justice system is, are the first to take matters into their own hands. There are even methods to minimize this inmate-to-inmate violence, but the prison system does not really care that much.
In Oklahoma when I was in prison, we had one specific prison---JHCC--- that offered the sex offender treatment program----SOTP. I refused the program, but toward the end of their sentence most sex offenders in the entire system enrolled and those that did were shipped to this particular prison to attend the program.
This particular prison was called the "Cadillac of Prisons" in the Oklahoma DOC system. They had a lot more privileges than most inmates at other prisons in the system-----pizza was brought in once a week, special "Honor Dorms" were built for those with good conduct records, more items to choose from in the canteen, etc. Because of that, many inmates within the system wanted to be shipped to this particular prison and those that were already there did not want to leave.
The inmates taking the SOTP were housed in a separate pod, but the GP---general population----inmates could still mingle with them. They had contact with each other.
The warden---Jack Cowley--- even had his own TV program there in prison. He told the other inmates that "if they so much as laid a hand on one of the sex offenders, he would personally see that they would be shipped to the maximum security prison in the system and kept in isolation 23 hours a day for at least five years."
Nobody wanted to go to the maximum yard at McAlester, so to my knowledge, no sex offender was ever assaulted at JHCC in all the time I was in prison. Sex offenders at other mediums were assaulted often, but not at JHCC; and btw, JHCC was a medium security prison that housed inmates with murder convictions serving anywhere from 60 years to life.
Much of this assault nonsense could be stopped, but nobody really cares. This is a real problem in our prison system and needs to be addressed.

On Daily Strength there was a long discussion regarding what's considered "psychoanalytically" normal and not normal ( according to the newly scrubbed up DSM-5) in a self-reporting survey of the general 'free' population....with a lot of jargon thrown around and % quoted
What I am really concerned about is the Words" and their definitions morph into knee-jerk violence when thrown around by haters and "news" media bent to 'reporting' salacious stories.

To use words/ labels like "child sex predators" and pedophiles to reference everyone convicted and then to end the story without condemning the prison or the prisoner who attacked the "child sex predator / pedophile" but to simply warm he's got 15 years to go and "Bubba will get him" as though the legal 15 year sentence is not enough so extra punishments are OK by the general (voting) public and by the Prison system also...
Words do matter because they telegraph the guy is somehow inhuman and so it's OK for the haters to pour their violence out on this person labeled "fair game by and for haters" aka this "child- sex-predator aka pedophile" and maybe (hopefully?) kill him / drive him "crazy" before his 15 years is even up?
And exactly why does his attacker "hate" him? What traumatic sh*t was done to him as a child in his family that he gets satisfaction attacking someone this way?
But then the guards are often hired out of the same knee-jerk population of John Walsh fired-up haters so who cares if a couple of Child-Sex-Predators / Pedophiles ("offenders") are beaten up over and over again for 15 years? Just saying words morph and labels matter they become life and death 'matters' in some prisons/ and when googled by some tolls
Sometimes the inmate attacks a sex offender because he really does hate him, since the inmate attacking---and many inmates in prison----were abused themselves when they were children.
BUT, sometimes one inmate will attack a sex offender just to show the older inmates that he is "one of them" and to somehow prove that he, too, is a true convict and needs to fit in. In a higher security prison, there is a prevailing idea that child molesters---often called "chomos"---need to be harassed and threatened.
These attacks do not always occur because the inmate really hates the offender, but happen so one inmate with low self-esteem can prove to other that he is a "real" convict----whatever that is.

Prisons are pretty much a reflection of our larger society. White-makes-right at the top (higher-order hence more pecking rights) then gangs in shades of tan descending on down to black until the prison system is full of Warriros and Young Turks of all shades all bent upon climbing over everyone and climbing up the prison/ corporate? ladder. As for those climbed over as you ascend? You get to label :Those People" as weak, degenerate baby rapers labels which tell every one " I'm better than Them, maybe especially if you are already in prison and need reassurance that there actually is someone your regular-prisoner label makes you automatically better-than?
I've been watching Ken Burns, "The West" on Net-Flix and we as a country were just more open about our "right-to-hate and kill and steal back then....We still reward the Haters. Today we seem to hate even the need to be more politically correct than we are actually interested in being 'correct' more civilized or less murderous We love it when a hater discusses his "hand size" when the CIA does "rectal feeding" when we brag about what we will do to "Mexican Rapists' because we all in or out of prison believe the Might makes Right...and we think the Justice System always sorts that all out correctly aka to the Hater's satisfaction.
Someone (Wisconsin, I think) said on a different post that they had looked into John Walsh's 'background and before his son Adam was kidnapped and killed "they say" John was a wheeler and dealer in Florida with mob connections...which would make sense of his taking "Family" Revenge and calling all this Justice. Who Knew?
