I read some of the comments and it hurts me to hear what some people say.
Just today i had a lady from down the street at my home as i was having a yard sale and she asked me how my husband was doing in prison and i told her he is fine, she asked if i see him and i said yes. Then she proceeded to tell me about an 85 year old man in our county that was arrested for raping a 4 year old and she just can't believe it. Then she said if she had a child that had been raped she would cut the guys thing off and go from there and i told her to STOP! I told her she has no idea how she would react or how she would feel until she is put into that situation for real. I told her she needs to stop talking like that as she has no idea. Boy she got quiet, got a couple things and left.
I'm sorry she has a lot of nerve coming on my property and talking like that knowing what we went through. Although she is the area noisy person.
Love ya anyway:)
Kate
I did not post it to scare mothers. Trust me, that is the last thing in this world that I would EVER do. I debated about posting it at all, but I finally did and I will tell you why.
The article does mention how sex offenders in prison were treated IN THE PAST, but it goes on to clearly state that, for the most part, those days are over. This, I thought, would give assurance to the mothers or wives with men in prison.
That was the main point I wanted to bring out. Times have changed and it is much safer in prison for most sex offenders. THAT is the reason I posted this.
Also, I wanted to reinforce the fact that most sex offenders do OK in prison. Those that get beaten up are usually ones that do something stupid the inmates do not like and then the inmates use their sex offender status as a excuse to hurt them.
Several of the more intelligent and thoughtful inmates did in fact admit that the old way of dealing with sex offenders in prison by physically hurting them is gone and the new way is to enable them to do their time in peace. This information came from the inmates themselves.
You will also have to remember that there are many, many sex offenders in prison now, which was not the case 20 years ago. This also makes it safer. And a sex offender with a shorter sentence will never go to a medium security prison, where all the violence is, anyway. They will go to a minimum since they have a short sentence.
I know when I was in prison there was a specific yard, Joseph Harp, where sex offenders were sent to take the sex offender treatment program. They had a warden there that told the other inmates, "You lay one hand on one of these sex offenders and YOU will be shipped to either another medium where it is not so nice OR to the maximum yard at McAlester."
The inmate had too much to lose by confronting a sex offender, so they left them alone. NOBODY wants to go to a medium where there is too much prison politics, too much violence, and just a crummy place to serve time.
And Kate, your son is on a SNY yard, so he will be relatively safe.
