But in reality all men are on a registry, they call it Selective Service (the Draft). All citizens that have an SS card are registered with the US. You are registered in each state with a Drivers license. I know that none of these put a persons life online with their picture, but most people do it voluntarily when they open a Facebook or any other social network account.
I hate the registry too, think that it is absurd and only breeds more hate and fear, but I don't believe that if we put all criminals online like that will 'fix' the issue or cause anyone to 'see the err of their ways'. I see it as one more step for Big Brother and as soon as they get all the 'unsavory' folks all registered, it is just a matter of registering their families and you'll have over 50% of the country registered whether they committed a crime or not.
If law enforcement would like to make things safer for folks then they should be working on integration amongst all local, state and federal offices and attempt to leave behind the egos and attitudes that you know happen when these branches of law enforcement try to work together. Their systems are antiquated, slow and not integrated well if at all in most areas. So if you commit a crime in one state who is to say that anyone will know in another if anyone is looking for you somewhere else. Our troubles are far deeper than just a registry, they are about basic civil rights that all of us 'free' folks 'non-felon' folks that we have GIVEN AWAY to our government in the name of SAFETY and SECURITY is what is so angering and to me, what needs to be changed....
One is a DUI registry and the other is a spousal abuse registry, even though those two registries make much more sense than a sex offender registry.
Too many politicians and their cronies---cops included---would find themselves on a DUI or spousal abuse registry. They can't have that.
If cops and politicians are good for one thing, it is this----they cover each other's back.
