Brother is getting released in June and I am trying to find a place for him to live. He is in Illinois and I am not, which makes this even more challenging. I've been combing craigslist and have talked to a few landlords. I haven't found a place yet and need some thoughts on how much I tell them. They generally ask what he did. I want to be as truthful as possible--I think it will be better for him if a landlord isn't surprised at a later date with other information--like if he looks at the registry or someone makes some kind of complaint. (His registry page will say "predator" with a cp charge that says "film/tape/photo/act" which sounds like production). The truth is that he had a relationship with a 17year old (which is legal) but they took personal pictures of each other (which is Illegal). He wants me to tell potential landlords that he accidentally came across some cp on the internet. I'm not sure which is better.
He thinks I worry too much about all these details but based on everything I read on the RSOL website and SOSEN and coming here, my concerns don't seem crazy. I'm struggling with how to approach landlords advertising on craigslist. I'm a total stranger living in another state asking if they'll rent to someone other than me who is currently in prison for a sex related offense. It's a tough sales call. And as a shame based person (whole other issue), it's really, really hard for me.
I'm heading to Illinois next week to drive around and look for "For Rent" signs in windows. I feel like I might be more successful if I can talk to potential landlords face to face. I'm hoping to zero in on privately owned properties that are on the edge of a town or are a bit rural. Looking at the registry to see where others live can't help him. He's not allowed to live at the same address as another registered citizen while he's on parole. And he's not allowed out of prison until I find him a place to live that is approved by the parole office. And it takes the parole office weeks to approve a residence. And yes--they get in touch with the landlord and do a site visit.
Starting to ramble--getting back to topic. Anyone have any thoughts on how much to tell the landlord?

He will find out at some point anyway, and it is far better that he hears what really happened from you than to hear some embellished story from the neighborhood gossip that makes your brother look like some kind of monster.
Explain to him what really happened. Yes, he might decide not to rent to you, but it will stop a lot of problems down the road.

I would also look at the court documents and see what charges he was actually convicted of. I would let the landlord know that. I am not sure from your message if he was charged with CP or just sexting a minor. I am sure that probation will tell the new landlord everything and more. The more the landlord knows from you and your bother the better it will be. You can also ask the PO if they know any offender friendly landlord's in the area your bother is looking at.
