They are not meant to make sense and their effectiveness is no longer the goal.
At one time these laws had a noble aim of protecting the community, but that era has long passed. Today they are used for political gain, both at the state level and the national level, and for no other reason.
The politicians use the fear that the media has instilled in the average citizen to pass a bunch of irrational laws concerning sex offenders to ensure their agenda of re-election term after term.
We continually are bombarded with myths such as watching porn causes rape, a child is re-victimized every time a CP image is viewed, everyone on the registry is a child molester, the registry keeps society safe, etc. All this is just foolish propaganda----used by a certain group of people----without any scientific basis.
The registry and sex offender laws are no longer meant to make any common sense and their goal is not to protect society.

Nothing will change until the voting public becomes educated to the extent that they demand the laws be changed. This can come with education about the issues by groups or even by individuals such as you or I, or it can come when a family gets thrown into these situations and learns first hand how destructive and ineffective these laws are.
Education through experience seems to have a longer lasting and more pronounced effect, as we all can attest.
Until that happens, we have to rely on fighting to prevent any more future laws from being passed or on court decisions in our favor that will give the registrants and their families relief.
The idea that we can approach the legislators and explain our story with the hope that their compassion and common sense will prevail and the laws will be changed is just not reasonable.
At no point, will we hear a bunch of politicians say, "We understand some of these sex offender laws are unfair and ineffective, so in the next session, we plan to make some changes." Politicians are not humanitarians----they are professional vote-getters and they will continue to put more emphasis on getting re-elected than doing good for the country.
I have talked to numerous legislators and many have told me, "We know the laws are ineffective and even counterproductive at times, but their is NO POLITICAL WILL to change these laws, so we have no plans to do so."
One recently told me, "If I try to amend any sex offender law, I would be labeled as 'coddling sex offenders' at the next election by my opponent and my chances of retaining office would be nil. It would be political suicide."
That puts it all in a nutshell right there. These laws are political in nature.
