Hope these links can help those finding themselves

Been away for a while, but with all the new people here and those up against c.p. charges with their loved ones makes it hard to stay away for long. I am hoping these links will help you understand a little more about how these incidences happen in the first place and how to help your loved one get the best possible outcome in sentencing. You will have a lot of reading to do, but knowledge is strength and the sooner you educate yourself and your loved one, the better you will fare through this.
I know on the outside, you feel you are up against incredible odds but tragedy strikes many people whether it be incarceration or death in the family, they find themselves alone picking up pieces. It is a matter of adjusting your life to persevere and many times sacrificing prior luxuries to do so, you will find ways.
Getting your loved one through this can prove to be a much heavier task as they are often in the deepest abyss of despair. First off, don't give in to the horror stories about prison and sex offenders. My son has never hidden the facts about his charges and has never been hassled for it (not that I recommend this approach for others, it was his personal decision knowing he would never be able to pull off lying for the length of time he would be in) neither has he witnessed anyone getting harassed for their charges by other inmates. They are creating minimum securtiy prisons that have a high percent of these internet charges and the chance they will find many others with the same charges are good and as long as they mind their own, they will be safe. Let them know that you are in touch with others that have loved ones in the same situation and that this is not the end of the world, others are getting through it, so will they. As hard as it is, keep your optimism up when visiting or writing them, and never let your guard down on this! It will pay off.
Enough of that for now, here are the links I found to be the most useful in understanding the laws and how the federal justice system works. Hope you are able to go the distance with your loved ones, and once you get over the shock and are ready to get to work making changes that will affect their future, you will find many groups out there to work with, just stick around - they will come your way.
Wish you all the best, you are far from alone as this board is just the tip of the iceburg. -j-
This is a hefty read, but well worth the time and effort....

A Method for Careful Study: A Proposal for Reforming the Child Pornography Guidelines

December 12, 2011
Federal Sentencing Reporter, Vol. 24, No. 2, p. 108, December 2011
Abstract:
The U.S. Sentencing Commission is reportedly nearing release of a much-anticipated report to Congress assessing the validity of § 2G2.2 as a sentencing tool for child pornography offenses. A consensus for considering reform exists. What remains uncertain is what sort of changes might be coming, and by what process they may occur. In order to merit deference and compliance, any changes to § 2G2.2 would need to reflect relevant and validated scientific data yet also account for common practical experiences. In this article, the author, an assistant federal public defender, proposes a specific framework for how the Sentencing Commission might reform § 2G2.2 to better reflect science and common experience. The proposal draws on the author's experiences prosecuting, defending, and consulting on these cases over the last twelve years, as well as analysis and discussion of available scientific studies and statistics.

I see you decided to come out of retirement and help the rest of us poor souls. We need you around here.
I agree with most everything you said and you, as usual, make some good points BUT....
the reason your son fared well in prison telling everyone his charges is that he is at a minimum security. If he ever is sent to higher security, he will not be able to do that. There will be disastrous consequences.
There are exceptions, but they are rare.
A normal person with sex charges who goes into a medium and tells the other inmates his charges right away will not last long. They will run him off the yard before they get a chance to know him and he will be lucky if does not get attacked.
I don't know how many times I saw that when I was in prison.

If telling the other inmates your charges at a medium security prison is harmless, why do they have special prisons---special needs yards----set up in many prison systems that house mainly sex offenders and other inmates who might have a hard time making it on another yard?
There is a reason so many sex offenders are in PC or have been placed at a prison in with all the other sex offenders. Think about it.
I know at least three other ladies on the board who have loved ones in prison and who I have spoken to, that have had their loved one threatened to the point that they had to go to PC or "catch out."
I have absolutely no idea why anyone thinks that an offender can go into a medium security prison and let the inmates know his charges---and still feel safe.
Ask any former inmate if it is a good idea to reveal your charges at a medium.
