The safety of sex offenders in prison is rather complicated and involves several factors. Sex offenders always do well at a lower security, since nobody cares about someone else’s crime. The lower security inmates are usually non-violent offenders and many are first time offenders. They are so worried about keeping themselves safe that they never contemplate causing problems for another inmate.

I was at both a medium and a minimum security prison in my eight years. The medium security prison was the roughest in the state and was called Gladiator School by people in the system, but even there, if a sex offender could carry himself well, respected others, had good communication skills, and did not appear to be fearful all the time, he could do reasonably well.

Muscles and physical strength in prison does not mean an inmate will do well in prison. Rather, how well an inmate does in prison is all about how he carries himself and the image he projects to the other inmates. I have seen 130 pound guys do well, and I have seen muscle bound guys carried out in a stretcher.

Many sex offenders who get hurt in prison do so not just b/c of their charges, but b/c they act weird or do things to piss the rest of the inmates off. So it is not just the charges that cause any fights, but the way they acted.

Let me give you some specific examples. There was a child molester on our unit who would never shower. He was also mouthy and the other inmates did not like him at all. They would have probably beaten his ass anyway, but the sex offender label gave them even more of a reason to beat him up.

Conversely, we had a couple of sex offenders who were older, respected others, minded their own business, and kept a low profile and nobody ever bothered them. Oh, the other inmates did not like their crimes and many shunned them, but nobody ever thought about physically harming them.

I saw somewhere than you had written your fiancé only had six years but missed going to a minimum security prison by one point. I have never heard of anyone with a six year sentence being sent to a medium security prison. What state are you from?

He will be OK as long as-----he acts like a respectful, normal human being. He does not want to do anything to attract attention, as he just needs to blend in with the other inmates. If he is seen as an OK guy by the other inmates, he will have no problems. Inmates do not beat up other guys they like or respect.

There was another inmate named Dave. Dave had about a fifth grade education, but he was a wise-ass. It did not take long for the other inmates to capitalize on his sex offender status and beat the hell out of him. Dave was in one of my remedial reading classes. He once told me----and he was proud of this----that he was not bisexual but trisexual. I asked him what the hell trisexual meant. He said, “I like men, women, and little boys.” It was nonsense like this that got him beaten up.

At one point, I had a sex offender celling with me. This guy was a know-it-all and would argue about anything with the other inmates. He and I almost came to blows over whether the evening meal should be called “dinner” or “supper.” So he was considered a pain in the ass to everyone. He also made the mistake of playing poker, getting in debt, and not paying his debt.

One afternoon, after count had cleared, one of his poker buddies came into the cell and slammed the door behind him. He used a lock in a sock to hit him in the head and then stabbed him 17 times, puncturing a lung. He was attacked not b/c he was a sex offender but b/c he was disrespectful when he refused to pay his debt. I remember it plain as day when the attacker left the cell. He told Chuck, “you moth** f**ker, if anyone asks what happens, you fell down the stairs.”

So it is not always just the sex offense that gets guys in trouble. Other inmates hate it when an inmate appears creepy or not normal. But, yes, being in a medium security prison with a sex offense does require a person to be careful.

Hey Rew, we are in CA. Minimum is capped at 18 points and I was shocked when he told me that he had 19. This is his first arrest, and he "only" got 6 years, but he is undocumented so I am not sure if they counted that against him. A friend of mine covered for someone close to him and had 19 points as well, but this was his second arrest so I was surprised when I compared them. The case itself must have added the extra points. I was really worried about medium security because they said that this was the worst. Something I am also REALLY stressed about is that he is going to a 50/50 yard which is half SNY and half general population. This seems really unsafe. His counselor ended their meeting with him saying, "I hope you learn your lesson."
