The fiasco we called The War on Drugs and the mandatory sentencing has done nothing but fill our prisons, while making no one safer.

The mandatory sentencing has taken the sentencing from the judges' hands---where it should be---into the hands of the legislators who pass these laws for political reasons. This politicizes the judicial system, which can only lead to disaster.

From the article it's obvious that there is a bit of a turning in the tide with a push towards second chances as its costing so much for incarceration.

There was one candidate in my area of Missouri who had hired an SO for her company, and actually met with families of SOs to talk about making reasonable changes to Missouri's draconian laws... naturally her opponent attacked her for it. Every commercial talked about her being soft on SOs and allowing them to work in people's homes. She lost.
