Also...and was wonderkng....can an SO refuse to apply for a driver's license? I mean...can he not ride a bus? a bicycle? a skateboard? Reading other sited where you have to notify them within 48 hrs of any change of residence then go down and notify DMVH of the change (and assuming more money for the new address changes)..but what if u don't apply or refuse a driver's license? They can't make u get one..or can they?
I am thinking of my son when he gets out and won't have two dimes to rub together and won't be able to afford a vehicle...why would he need a DL? Just curoous...

As far as I know there isn't a fee for registration in Florida. The driver's license issue is another matter but I have no idea what the fees are. Even if he refuses a driver's license your son will still have to go to the DMVH and get a letter stating he attempted to comply with the registration law but was unsuccessful because he doesn't have a driver's license. He'll then have to carry that letter with him at all times. The other option is to get a State ID rather than a license but except for not being able to drive all the conditions would be the same.

In tenn here they give you a sex offender card that your supposed to carry with you at all times or drivers lic .that way if you are found to be without any them they charge you for not having it .when he gets out probation or parole dept will let him know and give a card or what ever it is to him .

My son does not have a driver lic but he does have a state issued ID card - it has the statute he violated printed on it - he also has to carry an id card from the sheriff office that id's him a SO - he only has to produce that if a law enforcement officer asks for his identification. In the last 2 years I have had to pay for my son to get 3 new state of florida ID's cards (costs the same as a driver's lic) I do not know how the fees are mandated but they are very high. He also has to pay 25 dollars a week to go to group. And of course the fees for polys and other assessments - it has put me on a roller coaster of debt

Oh yeah and also of course helping with his rent and other bills because he is not allowed to live in the house where he was born and raised. And paying the curt fees etc. Most of the fees for probation are centered around the cost of the mandated monitoring and the work the sheriffs office did and the cost of the investigation and court case

@advocate: why 3 i.d's in the last 2 yrs? Did he lose them or just had to renew them do to moving?
That's what i don't get...i just renewed my FL DL and its good for 6yrs.
i understand if an SO moves..then he has to notify the sheriff ect..but getting and paying for a new card EVERY freakin time?? Ridiculous....
my son has 9 more yrs in prison...hopefully this lunancy will subside by then...i'm sorry

In Oklahoma all registrants must get a new driver's license every year; they will allow an SO a driver's license, but it will expire in one year.

The aggravated and habitual offenders have the word "sex offender" plastered across the face of the license in THREE different places; those who are not aggravated or habitual still have to get a one year license, but there is no "sex offender" on the license.

I renewed my license this month and there was no charge. Usually there is a twenty dollar charge.

Using the state's criteria, a habitual offender is basically a repeat offender, and an aggravated offender is one who was convicted of a sex crime after November 1, 1999. I am in neither category.

Yes every time your address changes you have to get a new one with the new address or the sheriff won;t register the SO. and the worst part is that you have to do all of it in a really short amount of time - so like when my son got kicked out of the extended stay where he was (some other guest found out about him and made a real stink - the manager and others had no problem with him at all but the complainer called corporate and they said he had to move) - so i had to put him in an awful hole in the wall - go get a new ID card and then go register at the sheriffs dept. and if you don;t have an appointment they make you wait and I have waited for him for 3 hours before.

A person is an aggravated offender just becasue the crime was after 1999? that is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is crazy, but you have to understand this is Oklahoma, a Bible Belt state with a lot of rednecks and illiterate people. Hell, even the lawmakers are bonkers. Stay out of Oklahoma; they are crazy here.

I am not sure why I did not get charged this time but I will try to find out for you. Frankly, after waiting three hours, I was more that ready to get the hell out of there. Also I didn't ask any questions because I did not want to give them a chance to catch any mistake before I got out of there.

I think it probably has to do with the fact the SOs have to renew their license every year so if they, say, charged them $10 every time, that would be $40 for four years, whereas a normal license for a regular person is only $20 for a four year license. I guess they wanted to charge the SOs close to the same they charge normal citizens.

Does anyone know for sure if there is any oyher class of ex-cons that has to put up wiyh this kind of shit on a yearly basis? Do murderers? Drunk drivers? Rapist? Bank robbers? Burglers? Car thieves?
And seriously...i thought the whole point of a DMV was registration of VEHICLES..not individuals.
I just don't get the yearly harassment with the license. I completely understand in regards to the law enforcement...keeping them in the loop about your address...but DMV or DMVH?
Ever been asked when someone is verifying your i.d." is this your current address?" Nope...that license is 3 yrs old..and you verbally give them your new kne and nobody bats an eye. And when uour license is up every 4 or 6 yrs..you naturally give them your latest address so they can send your registration bill to you. Such a crock of shit...i better get me a shot of scotch before i totally lose it here.
