What place is he and state?

He is in Mendota, CA

The good thing about CA is Janice Bellucci - she has a great group there. Someone from her sight could help the ACSOL. It all depends upon where he is now and his situation.

Is he wanting to transfer to the medium unit or the minimum unit at FCI Sheridan? Is he currently at a medium or minimum security federal facility? Being a sex offender, he will probably never be eligible for a work camp.

Janice in California is the greatest advocate that we have, so yes, California is very fortunate to have her. She is not afraid to file lawsuits against counties or municipalities who enact residency restrictions or anything else sex offender related.

Janice works at the state level and I don’t think she does much work in the federal system; FCI Sheridan is a federal prison. Of course, once a person is released from either state OR federal custody, they will have to face some of the restrictions that Janice fights.

California hands down has the best state RSO chapter in the country. Those folks are organized and they have Janice.

He is in a medium and he want's to transfer to be closer to home. But I have heard that FCI Sheridan is not the safest place. I told him I would do some research before he puts in his request. He still has three years to go.

Sheridan FCI medium is terribly overcrowded at the moment and a few years ago there were a couple of violent episodes there, one of which resulted in the death of an inmate. A couple of COs also suffered face slashings in an incident.

Violence, of course, is not new to a mediums security prison, if it is a federal prison or a state prison. The medium prison I was at had about 12 stabbing deaths a year and many, many near fatal beat downs.

Since he is a sex offender, he will have more problems at a medium security prison with the other inmates than if he was your run-of-the-mill offender. The minimum or lower security prison are much safer.

If he is doing well without any problems where he is at, I think he might be better served to stay there until his security points reduce to the point that he is minimum eligible. The security points will gradually fall off as time goes by. At that point, he can ask for a transfer to Sheridan minimum security.

I would hate for him to be doing well where he is at now and transfer to Sheridan medium and get beaten up b/c of his sex offender status. Usually if a medium eligible sex offender is doing well in prison, it is best to stay at that prison rather than taking the chance of going to a completely new medium security prison and having problems with the other inmates.
