I have done a rewrite and merged my posts into a complete story depicting how our life on the registry has been this year. Please read and offer suggestions for improvement:
Life As We Know It...Now
We moved from the cold country of Northern Michigan in 2006, to a tiny town in South Carolina, looking for a better life and a warmer climate. We immediately fell in love, both with the town and the wonderful people here in the deep south.
All was well, until the beginning of this year, 2011, when a friend of our daughter and her husband, took it upon himself to post my husbands registry listing ON FACEBOOK, complete with a detailed description of what the legal terms of my husbands crime were, and his knowledge of the "fact" that "he had to have done it, because they had enough evidence to convict him in a court of law." He had no idea that my husband's conviction was the result of a false accusation, an incompetent defense and had occurred more than 20 years ago.
Because this person was also on our friend list and that of many of our friends and relatives, it showed on the news feeds around the world. The night following its appearance on facebook, a car raced by our house and a dark figure leaned out and screamed, "We'll burn that house down with you in it you f***ing perverts!"
We filed harassment charges and took them to court. The same judge who told us we had a case and that no one in his jurisdiction should have to fear for their lives, ruled that the registry was a matter of public record after this person tearfully told the judge that he had been molested as a 5 year-old child and that he felt he had the right to warn everyone when he knew of someone who was a danger to their children. The judge ruled in their favor stating that he found no evidence of harassment.
This same "tearful" fellow and his wife laughed all the way down the courthouse steps and to their car, with the wife posting from her cell phone onto facebook how they won because "the judge must have had a bias against sex offenders too!"
Several months later our eviction from our home of 4 years was supported by yet another local judge.
Our dear friend that lived next to us owned both homes and let us live there, both because we agreed to fix the house up and also help her out when she needed it. She understood our circumstances and had no issue with my husband and son being on the registry. She was disabled and raising her grandchildren. So we spent the 4 years helping her with that. We also participated in many bar-b-ques at her house, with my husband as the cook. Our relationship with her was close enough that we attended her family reunion with her at her insistance.
She passed away on March 26, 2011. Her daughter, (mother of the above mentioned children) took over the houses and wasted no time in looking up the registry by address and was appalled that her mother had allowed "those people" to live next door to her children. In the 4 years that we lived there, she came to visit her children twice. I also have to add that she spent one of those visits trying to get my husband into bed with her and was told to knock it off because he was married, by her own son.
I am the one who took these children shopping, picked them up from school when they were sick, went to their school programs and my husband did repairs on her mother's house, the kids bikes, did yard work for her mother, and several times even rushed to her mother's house to help her up when she had fallen. We are also the ones who took her mother to the doctor, hospital and finally to the nursing home and visited her mother everyday, until she had us banned. She even had us banned from her mother's funeral, which many of the relatives questioned. As I recounted this information to the judge in his chambers, she sat there shaking her head, denying that anything of the sort had occured. In the long run, nothing counted but the fact that my husband and son were on the registry. The judge gave us 10 days to find a place and move all of our possessions.
We had a friend who knew a friend who had a house, so we did get a roof over our heads in the allotted time. Shortly after moving in there, my husband made the mistake of drinking and then walking to the store a couple blocks away, on his way home he waved at a police car on his way across the street to our house. They stopped and ran a warrant check and did not arrest him. They did however, return later and voiced accusations of failure to register the new address, very loudly on our front porch, well within earshot of neighbors who were sitting on their porches at the time. I (all 4ft 11 in of me) got up in their faces and told them they better just check their records because we took care of it and it was showing as the correct address on the registry listings. They left, but the damage was done.
The very next day one of our neighbors marched right up on our front porch and got nose to nose with my husband telling him if he or our "pervert" son even looked at someone in his family he would kill both of them on the spot. We began looking for somewhere else to live.
We now live in a beautiful home in the country thanks to friends who know us and love us for who we are. It almost sounds like a fairy tale doesn't it? I just believe that everything happens for a reason and God brought us through all we have been through, to the kind of home that we have always dreamed of, and finally some peace in our lives. I am not saying our lives will be simple forever, but it sure is nice just to bask in the tranquility of it for now.
2. I should try to get someone over their to help with the physical security of your son. If you can tell what region of the country you live. If you do not want to do it publicly, you can do it in pm. There may be someone on the forum who can go over to your region and be with you or your son to prevent attacks.
3. take pictures of the people harassing you, every time they come around. Keep a diary of their actions. This will help if you need to tell a lawyer or a judge about what happened. In pictures try also to get some proof of the date and time. For example -- when you photograph the people harassing you, try to have the daily newspaper in the picture.
4. If you can install security cameras around you house.
The Voting Project is related a lobbying group.
For a lobbying group, you have to have something that either attracts the politicians or threatens them.
Money and votes attract them.
Giving those votes to someone else threatens them.
In order to tempt them with money, we have to have a way to get money and donate it.
In order to have the votes, we have to agree to vote together when we decide on a goal.
I do not want to see this kind of thing up on here again... Neither party is our friend, neither party will do us any good at this point. If you knew about law and how this battle will be fought and won, then you would already know that trying to harness voting power without the money or the political clout that it is moot. We need to battle the laws that are already here by using the system to deem them unconstitutional and unenforceable. Trying to get them to change the law first isn't going to work because there was a reason and need for them to begin with, which can't be ignored. What we need to do is get everyone to realize that the way things are written isn't protecting anyone, this will cause the politicians to then make changes.
What you are trying to do here is tell me how to vote and that is NOT what this forum is about.
Cease and desist.
Neither party is our friend and a voting strategy assumes exactly that.
it is not a vote for any party.
It is way to show that 780,000 rso's and their families can have power at the polls.
once rso families can do that, then the major parties will have to sit up and listen.
that's real support
