I looked everywhere and I can find no statute that requires a registered sex offender in South Carolina to have any identifying mark on his driver's license.

I even downloaded a copy of the driver's license application for South Carolina and came up with nothing. The only thing on the form that even refers to a the sex offender registry is a reminder that sex offenders must registry with local law enforcement.

So, no I would say that your son has nothing to worry about in this area.

I live in South Carolina and there is no requirement for labeling on driver licenses or license plates. The registry here is currently for life but my PO tells me he is in discussions to change that. There is no level 1 classification only level 2-3 but all levels are on the internet. It currently costs $150/year and you have to report to the county sheriff office twice per year (level 1) or every 90 days for level 3. A sheriff deputy will visit the home every 90 days just to verify you live there (no search). Level 3 could be GPS depending on the crime. South Carolina recently ruled GPS for life is unconstitutional. There are only living restrictions for the top 5 crimes otherwise there are none.

I was browsing and read your profile. I saw where your son suffered from a bipolar disorder.

You see a lot of these crimes committed by bipolar patients when they are not well maintained and they are in the manic phase. I know I saw patients in the manic phase do some very weird---and out of character---things.

In the manic phase, the person cannot stand still or sleep. Their mind is racing and they have to stay occupied. It is almost as if they have received a large dose of amphetamine.

It is a shame that the criminal justice system does not take into account that many of these crimes committed are the result of a person being poorly---or not treated at. Of course, they have to prosecute murderers or violent rapists, but there are a lot of non-contact, non-violent sex crimes that are not caused because someone is a pervert, but because they are bipolar or suffering from something like autism.

I have seen people get married to a person they had only known for one day while in the manic phase. Another person I knew gambled away most of his savings in one night while in the manic phase of a bipolar disorder. I have this feeling that some people who download child porn or solicit another person on the Internet are also suffering from this disorder, as people in this manic phase are very compulsive individuals.

My point is that many of these people suffer from mental disabilities and they need treatment instead of locking them away for years. Many child porn suspects suffer from autism or other compulsive disorders.

I just wish society could understand this better, but we fear that which we don't understand and research for mental health in this country is at an all time low.
