And don't listen to @nathanrabalais he is really kidding about the Maxwell Smart thing...lol. Trust me.
You seemed very nervous, which I would be if I did something like that. I would recommend practicing in front of a mirror and/or in front of a video camera. If it looks off to you... then it will look off to others. You didn't sound polished and confident. You repeated yourself a lot. Hence, nervousness. News anchors practice all the time... and for good reason.
Succinct with the senator's aides that you had a concern with a bill that was passed and not giving them the whole spiel, polished and no civil war uniform would have netted you at lest one bent senator's ear out of all the offices that you visited that day perhaps.
For those of you talking about "looks of concern," the issue they had was with the filming, not the attire. Someone called the Captiol cops because Dennis was filming without asking consent. Everyone has their opinions, so I don't expect 100% of folks to agree with my approach. I will say this much though, I really hope those of you offering your opinions, good or bad, will show up at the DC event.
I know I'm not going to please everyone by my approach, but like I said, everyone has their own way of doing things.
However, what I want to inspire is ACTION. We can't expect change by just coming to a place like this and pontificate to each other and rage in this little corner of the Internet, while hoping a few more attorneys fall into our lap. We're not all going to be great orators or published authors or celebrities here. But we can all do something. For those of the Christian persuasion, remember Moses said, "Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." (Ex. 4:10) But he was called to action and I assume you know the rest of that story.
I think I've already proven the point that we have no reason to fear public spectacles. I hosted the Rally in Tally specifically because it was in the state with the worst reputation and we didn't get beaten, threatened, or arrested. We obeyed all laws and were allowed to exercise our right to free speech. In fact, the results were positive overall. We have overestimated the level of fear and loathing people have for everyone on the registry. Folks like that certain reptilian moron from Ft Lauderdale are extremist nuts in the minority. And Lauren Book is losing support. Her bid for public office is starting to backfire, as it opens her to criticism, and she's going to crack under pressure.
Compared to the FloriDUH rally, DC should be a cakewalk. I have a very good idea that is going to be very fun AND still informative.
One last thing to consider-- ARM is NOT a formal group, but a philosophy. If you are an activist, you ARE ARM. I'd like to see people share ways in which they have been active in promoting the cause of registry reform.
I don't know when if if those brochures will be updated. The person who formatted them left SOSEN years ago.
I made some of them way back in 2009, and other folks made other ones. Since the person who formatted these brochures left SOSEN around two years ago, no new ones have been created.
For the April demonstration, I'll be passing out something more specific to the theme of our demonstration.
What I'm looking for are information brochures to include in mailings to legislatures/ churches/ groups I go to speak to / community leaders, people I want to interest/ news people etc.
Any idea more resources you know of??
The National Registry of the Exonerated website / newsletter has some interesting stats regarding SO's and plea bargains and also about getting SO's "exonerated" (people out of prison) who were sent there (violated) to serve out their terms (sentences/probations/paroles) because they supposedly failed to register as sex offenders (but didn't really have to register)
Recently I got a brochure about SOSEN in the brochures FAQ section "I took that plea because I was assured the conviction did not require registration? How can the state now tell me it does?" Answer? As long as registration is considered to be a civil regulatory scheme, the state is allowed to change the registration requirements whenever it sees a "public safety" need." So if you didn't "need" LE supervision once you go to prison and serve your time and are on Parole then you have to register and that's not punitive even if you have to register after you get off parole?
RSOL sends new letters to inmates ( newsletter 1940-digest@yahoo.com ) and non-inmates (e-mail communications@nationalrsol.org )
What I'm looking for are information brochures to include in mailings to legislatures/ churches/ groups I go to speak to / community leaders, people I want to interest/ news people etc. I'm trying to gather some people in NV who might be interested in advocating before the NV legislature re JSO's and treatment of SO's and JSOin (adjudicated as adults under the AWA) in the NV prison system in particular Any idea about where I could locate more brochures / resources that you know of?? I'm not trying to publicize an "event" per se just contact interested parties (with out having to rent a Uniform???!!)
Guess I could give it a fling but I'm NOT at all teky and I don't want to reinvent the wheel. (WAR has a brochure re teen sexting but it is pretty old also)
