When I was released from prison in 2000, I tried to get homeowners insurance through Farmers Insurance and they turned me down.

It was not that I was a sex offender, but because I had a felony record. I don't know if they are still doing that, but I have heard of a felon having a more difficult time getting insurance.

I will be calling around other insurance companies. I'm just wondering if insurance companies can just cancel your coverage like that because of a criminal record.

Insurance companies are private companies who insure based on risk. They can do what ever they want... unfortunately..

@FreetoBreathe - you are absolutely right. in my experience, I have had few problems with my insurance provider.

I had the same thing happen when my adult son charged with the sex offence they won't carry him on my polices for our autos . We did find one for him here in Il

Here in Ohio I was able to keep all my coverage even after he was convicted and was able to keep his life insurance policy in effect while he is in prison. I got a letter stating that as long as the premiums were paid they would not cancel and honor his policy

Hi all - what types of insurance can be dropped due to a felony record? Medical? Auto? Homeowners? Life? It seems on this thread that people are referring to life and auto. I am not sure where to find this information. Also, is there a website that lists the restrictions SOs/convicted felons face upon release? Thanks! :)

The restrictions for sex offenders will vary from state to state.

Some states have residency restrictions, buffer zones, and a registration scheme in which the registrant is placed on tier levels, which determines how often he has to register and for how long. Some states place a mark on the driver's license of the registrant. Many states have made it illegal for a registrant to be in parks or close to playgrounds. There are other restrictions, but those are just a few.
