2nd to my way of thinking your guy was right to keep his cool, keep his wits abut him, even if it meant he "took it' he did not get charged with "assault' and then "diagnosed" in the "Reception and Diagnostic Unit" as "Violent" because a "Violent sex offender" morphs into more time down the road.
3rd These faked up "Diagnoses" stack up and over time they matter at parole hearings and and later on down the road during "sex offender Treatment" and on and on. The "Preacher who hit your husband was just preaching hatred and adding to his own "cred' with the Bible Beater gone wrong....
Your guy faced with a bad situation did the right thing..
.No need to Beat Yourself up over what happened when the Haters Go Crazy. The haters are the ones who need to be diagnosed and treated....Just google the Southern Poverty Law Center and you'll see we are not the only ones targeted, shamed, blamed and silenced by haters. Hate is, unfortunately endemic in the "System" because it makes money and the haters vote for politicians and preachers they "connect with"
If your husband is sent to a minimum security prison it is very unlikely---very unlikely---that he will be raped or killed---or even assaulted. In all my years in the prison system---at both mediums and minimums----I cannot think of one outright rape incident or murder at a minimum security prison. It sounds as if some inmates are just talking prison talk and having some fun at your husband's expense. Sometimes older inmates take great joy in scaring new inmates.
The reason there is very little violence----other than a 30 second fight or a bloody nose----at a minimum security prison is that the inmates there are at the end of their sentences with just a few years left on their sentence and their only priority is to be released and go home. They will not assault another inmate, risk a write-up or misconduct, risk losing some good time credits and have their released date set back up to a year.
They also do not want to risk getting sent to higher security---a medium---where nobody wants to go. Many have worked their time down from a medium security prison to a minimum and getting into trouble would send them back to a medium. Inmates are not that stupid. They can smell the door and they usually follow the rules.
If your husband is headed to a minimum security prison----a "low" in the federal system----he will be fine if he keeps to himself, shows respect to others, does not get into other's business, keeps a low profile, does not snitch, and does not get into debt.
There is very little violence at a minimum security prison. I can see no reason anyone has to "PC up" at a minimum for their protections.

You might wonder what determines if an inmate is sent to a minimum security prison or a medium security facility
At the reception center---the assessment center----which is his first stop before entering the prison system, they will determine his custody level---work camp, minimum, medium, or maximum--- by using certain criteria regarding him and his crime. In some places they use a computer program, put the date in, and the computer returns a certain number of security points for that inmates.
It is the number of security points that determines an offender's final placement in the prison system. The higher the points, the higher security level he will be housed.
Some of the factors that determine the amount of points are----whether his crime was violent or non-violent, the nature of his crime, the length of his sentence, if he has an escape history, if he is a first time offender or a repeat offender, his age, if he has any physical disabilities, and some of the prison programs he is required to attend.
The two main criteria that determine the custody level of an inmate is the nature of his crime and the length of his sentence. For example, they will not place an inmate convicted of murder or an inmate with a 30 year sentence at a minimum. Using the same logic, they will not place an inmate with a five year drug charge at a medium.
Hope this helps you understand the process they use.

The most violence is at high security prison. My husband saw a lot there when he was in there for less than a year. Being at a medium security prison, there is a lot less violence. In CA, there are guys who request SNY (protective custody), because there isn't much violence in there, mostly just fights.
I spoke to one guy who was just released from General Population, and he said there isn't very much rape as there are a lot of willing participants. If your husband doesn't have very much time, he will go to a medium or low security prison. And as long as he follows the rule as Rew statrd, he will be fine.
"Label" defines the nature of the crime, some times anyway. This label also "helps" determine Parole decisions and then tier level and required 'treatment' in and out of prison and on the Registry (and even effects civil commitment trialsif it comes to that) The whole ball of ."what ever" we never understand when we first hear the knock at the door or when we first 'go for help' like you did...
But then you had to stop the abuse and protect a vulnerable person and you did the right thing...You just never knew that after that would be collateral damage NOT caused by you caused when the "haters" voted for the politicians reviving ignorance and hate that eventually looped back on every one you care
about. No wonder Thought as Weak says she has grown to hate the system...
