Ban the Box on Job Applications for Former Offende

Upon browsing my favorite news sites this morning, I came across an editorial from the Tulsa World concerning felons attempting to procure employment. The crux of the article was the box on job applications that ask if you have ever been convicted of a felony.

Since we discuss the problems of sex offenders getting jobs, I thought this article might help someone. It really is a well-written, thought article.

Also included is an map of the United States which shows which states still allow the question of past convictions and which do not. I had never seen a map like that before.

Anyway, maybe this will help someone.

very good article you pu there , that will give people hope in beign able to get jobs to support their families . and those in dead end jobs they dont like . can look for a diff job to apply at and get a chance .

we can only hope this catches on. but with almost everyone doing background checks is there a difference between a mandated background check and - well what is the opposite of mandated..voluntary? background check? are most background checks considered voluntary by the employer themselves? i will have to look at where i work and see if they have the box...because i know they say they CAN do background checks but i have never known them to do one.

As someone who was involved in the hiring process in a production/manufacturing environment, the question of having a felony, and in my company's case, a misdemeanor, was mainly mean't to screen out Drug and theft offenders because it was a dangerous work environment and high dollar product...Having a conviction of any sort didn't mean the person wasn't hired(hell, I was an RSO) it was more about the honesty of the applicant and the last date of the conviction and how many convictions..Drug testing was mandatory, and I know some on here will have heartburn over that but again, it was a dangerous environment and I fired a couple of guys for failing the piss test, one was for alcohol.....We had felons working for us..One I am proud of, he came as a work release, young kid of 19, drug offender and he had the worst job in my Dept. and worked his ass off, when we were slow I taught him how to weld and when he was released, I hired him full time and when I was promoted to Forman, I promoted him to replace me as Lead....
I don't offer, but if asked, i tell the truth...Now, in my State they don't list the employer(some States do and that is wrong for both the SO and the employer who is willing to give a chance)...
