6 months before my son's release they updated their info on him. He gave them my address here in Philly. Told them that PA is his home and all his things are here. He also had a job waiting and me, his family.
If your son has family and a home waiting for him those are big pluses. A job is an extra kick but I know that's not always possible.
They accepted his info. Then the probation office here in PA came out about 2 months before he was released to ok it. And they did. I told them nothing about me or my son living in FL.
Did your son live in IL at any time? That might be a plus as well.
I immediately went there upon his release and met him at the door and we left for PA right away. If he was in FL for 3 days at a stretch he would have had to register in FL as well..
I was considering IL, my daughter lives in Chicago, but you have residency restrictions, there are none in PA.
There is something called the 'interstate compact' which basically says an inmate can be released to another state if that state will allow him in. When probation came to the house that's what they did.
Hope that helps.

They will also give him a complete physical, a mental health evaluation, and an education test to determine his education level. He will be there for about 21 days. After that he will be shipped to his destination prison somewhere in Kansas.
When he is released from prison after his five year sentence, if he does not have any probation, paper time, or any part of his sentence which must be served after his release, he can go live anywhere he wants. He will have already discharged his entire sentence in prison. That is what I did.
If his sentence requires a period of probation after his prison release, then he will have to file paperwork or use the Interstate Compact program to transfer to Illinois. The Interstate Compact Program requires that the receiving state will accept him.

Gosh, thanks so much. 4.5 years seems like an eternity - I hope I live that long. I miss my son so much - never would I have thought he would be the one to get in trouble........sorry, I digress. Thanks for the info.
