Stay away from Arkansas. Arkansas is in the Bible Belt, but even worse, they have started recently to enact laws against sex offenders that are very harsh and unreasonable.

Stay out of anywhere in the middle of the U.S. And stay out of the south east and south west. Either move to the east coast and live in the NE, or move to the war coast and live in the NW. They are the only states with decent, not great, decent laws.

Arkansas registrants cannot live within 2,000 feet of a church of place of worship; this affects only level 4 offenders. They also have general residency restrictions for schools.

Generally a registrant should avoid any state in the Bible Belt. If you are not sure where the Bible Belt is located, just think of this----take a line from Missouri down to the Texas southern border. Now push that area completely to the eastern seaboard of the United States. This area will include OK, TX, ARK, LA, ALA, MISS, TENN, GA, and a few other states.

All the states of the deep south are toxic to sex offenders.

Your best bet is to stay in the northeast or the northwest part of the country. They are usually more liberal and progressive in those areas and the laws are somewhat more relaxed.

The central plain states---Ohio, Indiana, etc. also have laws that are very restrictive for registrants.

Make careful note to stay away from Florida at all costs.

I think that Utah is decent. Coastie and Nathan can give you more information since they live there.

Michigan is lousy. California is bad, but the CASOL is doing a good job of making it livable.

I don't know a whole lot about Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Nebraska, or Montana, but someone who lives there can clue you in.

Also, some of those links take you to a page which lists the other states. You can use this to research the state you might want to move.

BUT, it is imperative that you do your homework on that state before moving there.

I've heard that WA is one of the better states, but like Rew said, do your research. Also, keep up on the laws since they can always change.

AR was in the running if only because I was offered a job with Game and Fish. :X Hard to turn down, but I want to be sure I do what is best for the family.

Arizona is great place to live but jobs are hard to find. You can get state aid there and registration requirements are that you have to update your license any time you move and give a copy to the sheriff's office. Once you find a permanent: residence you only have to update your license once or twice a year and give them a copy (but don't forget your paperwork). A plus is that the state checks up on the county, to make sure things are correct, and sends out a notice once a year that has to be signed and sent back in (preferably by signature return). If you are homeless, you have to register more often of course. Never forget the paperwork, or let an officer tell you that you don't have to do the paperwork, they will nail you on it (at least that's how they are in Nebraska). Always give copies of your paperwork to several trusted people in your life just in case your copies are lost or destroyed. With the newer laws they have cast broader nets to catch and imprison more people. Be careful out there lots of laws are going retro. :)

Oh I forgot to add that they do get verification on addresses but usually leave it at that until you move again. That was in Mohave County/Kingman, Arizona. :)

@pokeywub Arizona law requires that the Drivers License of an SO be updated EVERY year. Also, as far as registration goes, it is not an annual thing here in Arizona. It is ONLY triggered when you move, so if you don't move then you do not have to re-register. As soon as you move then , you do have to re-register. Just wanted to clarify that so you had the right information.

We did for some reason and my son had a permanent address on my property. :)
