I hope he makes the right decision. Either way you are doing a wonderful thing.
I also had him read the newspaper article that I made the front page in about fighting for the rights of people with disabilities so that he could gain a little understanding about me and that I am sincere in my wanting to help him no less than I fight for the rights of others.
The kid pretty much kept his attitude from this morning, but said he did feel a bit better after meeting his probation officer and not getting thrown in jail or prison. I would think he would be feeling a hell of a lot better so there is something going on that he is not sharing at this point and I am not pressing him to tell me.
I told the probation officer, in front of the kid, that I am very proud of him for asking to be put into a 30 day treatment program and that it took a lot of courage for him to ask for that help. Then I told the kid that I hope I did not embarrass him, but I will brag about him if I damn well want to -- he said thanks.
During our drive I decided not to ask him questions but to let him get to know me better, instead. So I told him different things about my life growing up as a kid, and different beliefs that I developed because of the things I was forced to endure like being rapped and brutally tortured and beaten for 11 years of my childhood.
I am still awestruck over his telling me that "I don't like it when you look at me because I feel like you are looking into my soul" -- coming from him, that is powerful and raw.
Anyway, until he goes to the treatment center he will live with me or his brother -- most likely trading off one to another. God I pray that this kid makes it.
We are all rooting for him.
I cannot tell you how proud I am of him for asking to go into a 30-day treatment program. I see so much value in him as a person and enormous potential in what he can achieve. Getting him to realize it is not an easy thing but damn, I am so proud of him.
When he gets in my van he always sits in the front seat. Today, I told him that from this day on that seat belongs to him - that he has earned that place in my life. A symbolic tangible thing for him to know that he is someone special.
He sold a cross to a pawn shop today, that means something to him. Tomorrow I am going to see if I can buy it back for him and give it to him as a surprise because I know it meant something to him and having it back will mean even more.
The first day, the kid was having a very difficult time fighting off the crave to use meth pretty much all day long and it came to a head in the evening time. The good news is that while one person reported seeing him with meth and getting ready to shoot up, he ultimately decided not to use it, though I serious question if he had it to begin with.
The kid was not entirely innocent in this incident because he was actively seeking out anyone who would give him drugs and his behavior and attitude throughout the day and night was completely inappropriate, which he was confronted on by myself and one of his friends who really laid into him about such, and even went so far as to tell him to stop talking and treating me with disrespect.
Today, the Douche Bag began threatening the kid with physical violence and a weapon. Despite this, the kid did not engage him in a physical fight, which for him was a good thing. However, in speaking with him, there was such anger (rightfully so) when he spoke about the sexual abuse he has suffered from this Douche Bag.
I bought the cross back from the pawnshop that the kid sold. The manager did me a personal favor in not hiking the price up too high in contrast to what he bought it for, so I could afford to buy it back. My question is when is it appropriate to give it back to the kid. I want to give it to him as a reward for positive behavior that will instill in him that it is not a gift per se, but rather something he has earned. Does that make sense?
