Women are taken for granted by some men who do not fully understand their role---or maybe do not even care.
They go through the pain of childbirth, they are the ones who stay up all night with a sick child, giving him or her Tylenol or his or her antibiotic so health may be restored.
They get little Timmy or Suzy ready for school each morning so they can have an education and a chance at a life better than the one they had.
They form a bond with a man to develop a family which is a conduit for the children to become a productive member of society.
Yet they are always taken for granted because many men are selfish.
One thing that has always stood out from my prison experience is it was almost always the mother that came to see the inmates. I would see some poor mother, maybe in bad health and having difficulty walking, standing in line to get checked in to see her son. It was truly a very humbling experience and I learned a lot from my prison experiences. It made a big impression on me.
Many of the younger inmates there, particularly the young African American men, never knew who their father was. Why? He ran off before the inmate was born. He was never around. But the inmate always smiled and glowed when he talked about his mother, especially with the blacks.
I was always impressed that the mothers always seemed to play such a pivotal role in these young inmates' lives.
Of course, men are important also. I don't mean to leave them out, but in prison, it was the women who did all the "heavy lifting."
We all have heroes. Some have baseball players who can hit a baseball 500 feet or a quarterback who can throw a 60 yard pass on a line for a touchdown.
But the real heroes of this country---and my heroes---- are the mothers and dads who struggle every day, going to work every day even when they are sick themselves, to make life easier for their children.
Why do moms do all this? Because they are mothers.

Thank you all and Happy Mother's Day to you all as well. I tried going to see hubby (saw him Friday too), but got all the way down there only to find out I can't visit on Sunday afternoons.
