I feel so out of touch with the things he's dealing with now. Like I don't know anything. And I think this is going to be even more apparent when he leaves county. I have no idea where he'll go, for how long, or where he'll end up. I don't know how long he'll be gone, since his sentence is indeterminate.
I want to know what to expect, even if I can't find out the specifics. When he leaves county, where will he go? How will I get in touch with him? How can I find out about visiting, phone calls? I feel totally at a loss but want to learn everything I can so I can do things correctly and find out everything I can. Just having some idea how things will proceed when he leaves county will help me.

After sentencing, he will go back to the county jail to await transport into the prison system.
He will stay in the county until there is prison space available for him in the state system. The length of time in the county after sentencing depends on many things. I was in the county for 55 days after sentencing, but I have seen guys in there for over six months waiting to go into the state system.
He will then be shipped to an assessment and reception center for evaluation and all kinds of tests. It is here that they will classify him to determine what programs he needs to take in prison and to which security level prison he will be sent. They also will give him a physical, a dental and eye exam, some education tests, and some other tests. He might be able to call you once or twice while at this assessment center, but it differs with each facility.
I do know that your correspondence with him will be held to a minimum during this period of time. Don't worry, just keep writing and the letters will catch up.
After about three weeks, he will be shipped off to his destination prison.

I am not aware of all the prison issues in every state, but I can give you generalities shared with all prisons. Also, if there is an incident or problem within the prison that you cannot solve or find info on, contact me.
