There have been many times when I have told people that prison can enlighten a person and make him a much better, wiser, stronger, and caring person who begins to really understand the true meaning of life and happiness.
When I mention that to people they look at me like I am crazy, but I have been there and I have seen it happen, as it is happening to your guy.
There are three types of people in prison: 1) those that should not be there, whether they were innocent or they just made a stupid one-time mistake to get into prison. These people are not criminally minded, 2) the career criminals who have made crime their life endeavor----they will never change, and 3) Youngsters, very young men who come to prison for the first time.
The people who are career criminals will never change. Crime and dishonesty has permeated their mind and soul to the point that they couldn't change even if they wanted to.
The youngsters are naive and depending on how they carry themselves in prison they can either become bitter from the experience or become a man and mature.
The inmates that are only there because they made a horrible, stupid one-time mistake--or were innocent--- are the ones like your guy. He is too old to be naive like the youngsters and too honest to be criminally minded as the real convicts, so he is in a class by himself.
These are the types of people that become wiser and stronger than ever because of their prison experience. They become complete human beings and learn what is and what is not really important in life---they become wise beyond their years.
There is a reason for that. In prison, an inmate has a lot of idle time. He does not have to go to the grocery store, he does not have to worry about laundry or meals, as that is done for him. He might have a piddly job during the day, but it really does not amount to much. He no longer has to worry about raising his family, taking care of his wife, or paying any bills. In short, he really has nothing to do but wait around to go home, BUT it also gives an inmate a lot of time to do what he did not have time for when he was on the outsdie------time to really sit down and THINK. He thinks a LOT, about where he came from, what he wants to do in prison, and what he wants to do once he is released. He thinks about things much deeper than ever before, things like relationships, what it means to be a good husband and father, and how he can improve himself as a person.
He now has time to ponder, to think deeply, about things like life, love, and all the attributes that make a person a complete human being. If he is wise, he will learn about things he never thought of before.
He explores his soul to find ways he can be a better husband, father, or just a better man.
Trust me, there is a LOT of soul searching done in prison.
I have seen a lot of youngsters mature almost overnight in prison and a lot of older guys become very wise.
I know he is not in prison yet, but he is locked up just the same.
This is what is happening to your guy. He will be a better man and a stronger person when he gets through this and the love between you and him will be greater than you ever thought possible.
I am so happy for both you and your guy. Angela, you have been a super lady to support your guy that way you have and you two will be together soon.
