Do you have any idea why he was threatened or beaten? Perhaps if he knows the reason, he can take steps to avoid it in the future.
How much time is he serving in prison?
Minimum security inmates rarely get beaten up, but it is not uncommon in a medium security facility. I know, I was at a medium security prison for almost a decade and I know how inmates think.
Inmates get hurt for a variety of reasons. Some of them are------
He is a sex offender or has a crime against a child. Inmates do not like these groups of people as many inmates were abused themselves as a child. Having either a sex crime or a child abuse crime makes an inmate much, much more likely to encounter problems.
He got into debt and could not pay those he owed. It could have been a gambling debt, a drug debt, or he could have just borrowed more than he could pay. This is another excellent way to get hurt in prison.
He snitched on someone. People who tell on others are at the bottom of the totem pole in prison. Even COs look down on snitches.
He appeared to be too comfortable with the COs or staff by talking to them too much. Other inmates get really nervous when they see another inmate talking a lot with the COs, as it irritates them and makes them wonder if he is a snitch and whose side he is on in this situation. There is a great amount of "us against them" in a prison situations, with the "them" being COs and prison staff. An inmate has to appear to be "just one of the guys" instead of some kind of maverick who likes to talk to staff.
He was disrespectful to another inmate. He could have played his music or TV too loud, slammed too many doors and woke someone up, or just have done anything the others deemed disrespectful. This mostly happens in medium security prisons.
He forgot to "do his own time" and got into other people's business. He might have gotten too nosy about another inmate's family or just asked too many questions or made too many comments to another inmate. Keeping a low profile and minding your own business is the best way to avoid problems in prison.
He got into the drug scene.
He was generally not well liked or respected by the there inmates. Inmates do not beat up other inmates they like and respect. Inmates do not like liars, people who cannot keep their word, people who brag all the time, or other inmates who they feel that is not on their side against the establishment.
He does not know how to carry himself or communicate with others, which may be a lack of social skills. Inmates do not like "know-it-alls" "smart asses", arrogant people, or anything but a common, normal, low-key person. Boisterous people get hurt in prison.
These are the main reasons inmates get hurt in prison. Some of these are correctable and some are not.
But knowing the entire story behind his confrontation will help him take steps so it won't happen again.

Thank you for the information. They mentioned that inmates were jealous that they may get out of jail. Also they are asking a lot of questions to the staff and COs. They seem more withdrawn now: staying mostly alone and the cell to avoid more issues.
Thanks again for the tips
