My guy has stopped complaining about it. He isn't a big eater usually, so it isn't as bad for him as for others.
They are supposed to give him a special diet because of all his allergies, but usually they don't. He can't eat fruits and vegetables, or nuts. So if they give him a peanut butter sandwich, he can't eat that. If they add an apple or other fruit to his tray, can't eat that.
This article didn't say that the portion sizes are so small, you are still hungry after eating and this is why there are fights. People fight to get food from other inmates.
It didn't say that on some occasions, they get a hot dog, ONE hot dog, and six tater tots. SIX!!! Is that enough??
They also serve these " mystery meats", which are undetectable to the human eye what it is. It is usually the hodge podge thrown together left overs, and much of their food is loaded with soy. Soy is ok in small quantities, but dangerous in the high quantities they are served. Soy can cause many health problems. Many stomach problems and is bad for you in big quantities. There are a group of men in Texas I believe that are suing the prison system for getting stomach cancer and other stomach problems from the soy they are forced to eat.
Sure they can purchase certain food items on their canteen list. That's what the prison is counting on. They want that commission on what our guys buy. But not much of that is good for you food either.
An inmate in my fiance's prison just got in trouble for letting another guy take chocolate chips from the kitchen he worked in. He went to segregation for it. I asked why risk taking chocolate chips, was this guy that much of a chocoholic? He said No, they use them as a bargaining thing, or as money. They will give someone else some chocolate chips in exchange for that person buying them things on their canteen order. It is a money thing. These guys have to get quite desperate and imaginative just to survive in there because of the inadequate food they get.
We can't even imagine not being able to eat what we want, when we want. But to not be able to get it, and have to live on the small amount of crap they are fed IS inhumane. Does anyone out here besides us care? Of course not. Not until they have someone they love in prison.
The way they are treated probably is being monitored also by psychologist groups to see how much tension, pressure and misery one person can take before they explode, go crazy, or get suicidal/
