"Multiple studies show that in-person visits are associated with a lower chance of recidivism, but who cares about long-term implications to society when cost savings and patronage contracts are to be had."

I have noticed over the years that it seems like Australia always finds a way to catch up with the United States. "Catch up" might not be an appropriate term but Australia seems to copy what American does regarding the criminal justice system.

They dropped it to 5 bucks. He left at that point, don't know how it worked out. I do think if the person who has to drive a LONG way wanted, this would be a good solution there, because it was a video visit anyway.
As far as taking away the human factor, they pretty much are, and yes studies show visits are imperative to their success or failure. But do they care. NO, they want those prisons filled up for job security and financial gain. Prison's are a money making industry. My criminal justice book said so.
They take away everything normal from them including all dignity. They take away their chance to raise their kids, make a good life for themselves and family. They take away everything, then expect them to come home and be perfect. When in fact MINE pretty much comes home quite the opposite. He is hell bent on doing everything he wants to, that he has missed. That lands him IN again.
Our justice system is so F**d up, and no one can change it. They won't allow that to happen.
Take away all human contact a person cannot thrive.
It's like the cavemen living alone in the jungle. Take them out of it, put them in the city, with people and they don't even know how to act. They wouldn't make it
Society will only get worse with the way our government runs the justice system. Prisons will stay full and those big shots running the show will live in bigger homes, have fancier cars, go on expensive trips and us out here will be struggling to find a few coins to buy a burger or even live in a home at all.
She will also be able to video call her young nephews in different states that are unable to travel. Yes, it is outrageously expensive and another
money making scam which punishes the family that foots the bill. It is a crime people are allowed to profit off those of us most vulnerable.
Yes, It is surprising they don't charge for physical visits.
