Prisons Recording Calls Between Inmate and Lawyer

An anonymous hacker has found phone records showing that prisons have recorded "at least" 14,000 calls between inmates and lawyers through software from Securus. As you might imagine, that potentially represents huge violations of both the attorney-client privilege and Sixth Amendment protections against interference with your right to counsel.

US Constitution?? Constitution? The government looks at the US Constitution as a mere annoyance---a hinderance---- and something they are forced to "put up with" rather than a protection for all American citizens.

If you do much work with inmates and in prison reform, you learn early on that this nation does not care about justice, as justice is just a word thrown around to placate the uninformed citizens to make them think there is some fairness in the system.

Nor do they care if they convict an innocent man and ruin his life and that of his family.

It is all part of the process called a Police State.

But the citizens have nobody to blame but themselves; they elect the politicians who pass restrictive laws just as they elect those who enacted the Patriot Act and any other piece of legislation that robs us of our Constitutional rights.

After 9/11, the bed wetters, the feeble minded, asked for more security in the form of laws-----well, their wishes have been realized.

Someday giving those rights away----for the promise of some security----will come back to bite us all in the butt. But then, it will be too late.

Just a sad situation indeed.

I am going to read your article you posted as soon as I am done with this. I am appalled that just recently they picked a simple situation, nothing terrible with us, and used it to get a hold of our conversations for the last month. Trying to find something they could drum up something bad we did. They even complained that it was quite expensive for them to get the recordings from Securus.

We are stuck with this company and these assholes that run this prison he is in, as many others are.

Listening to attorney's talking to their clients in prison SHOULD be illegal, but proves the people in prisons and courts, and cops can do anything illegal they want. WHO is going to be able to stop them? Seems no one is. Kinda proves it don't matter if you are innocent or not, they want to get you. They want to fill up the prisons they whine that are so overcrowded. YEAH they are, because they want them to be. It is a money making, sick industry. Not justice or rehabilitation at all.

I never knew that the jail and prison were for profit institutions until now. One 15 minute phone call is $27 if i have a local number. i changed it to a long distance number to lower the cost of the calls down to about 3.50 per call and plus there is the $10 processing fee and taxes. They take advantage of the families that are desperate to speak with their loved ones. no other calling options allowed other than "city coin" service. I had to make a choice, order the over priced commissary for my son once a week, or the over priced phone calls. I'm heartbroken

The calls where always record at all the prisons my love was at with the exception of calls to lawyer's and to a few others i think. All part of the fun the prison system.

The prison system is just that, a big money-making organization. There's no rehab, no help at all for the prisoners or families. Just making money off the grief of others. Don't get me wrong, I think there are some offenders that do belong separated from society, but come on, why punish the petty crimes so hard. We all know that a phone call shouldn't have to cost that much. I also have a real beef with the fact that in my area you can't visit on the weekends. I feel that it is just another way to make it hard on the families Having to uy clothing from the prison is also just another way of making a profit. Such garbage, but there seems to be no way to stop it. The standard answer you get from most people who are not affected by this is, "Well, they shouldn't have done what they did to get in there in the first place". So frustrating!

even if they did something that should land them in prison, the phone calls are so important, why can they get away with this? there should be a law that states an inmate be allowed phone calls to their families with a reasonable price. I cant afford it, i am allowed one 30 minute visit per week thru a glass and i have to share that time with his girlfriend, his 3 year old, and his little brother. I have read about some of the prisons in arkansas cancel visitation for the day if it falls on a holiday. WHAT KIND OF SORRY, LOW DOWN, PIECE OF CRAP, SCUM SUCKING, DIRT BAG MAKES A RULE LIKE THAT? The people who run these places to make a buck, they are animals.

Yes, Janie, they sure are. I feel that the guards, judges, lawyers, etc. are just as bad as the people they put in jail. It's all really robbery, but the legal kind, I guess. I'm trying not to be bitter but it's just not fair. We are the ones paying, in so many ways. My state doesn't allow good time on a plea bargain so it's 4 months for sure. If she doesn't learn anything from this, I will just die.

Janie1975 its pretty much standard hear not to get visits on holidays its sucks but what we did was savd about 4 years of holiday and birthdays and had them all at the same time! Yes i saved his presses for that long! Maybe a idea for you is to write to him its cheaper than calls and you get to say what you need to
Yes the system is geared to making money and not so much on the helping people side of things its wrong.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I know your plight. After doing 8-years in the federal prison as an inmate, I know most of the tricks and I have friends who were prison guards who got in trouble and ended up doing time with me. So the processes they use can be put on the big board.

I believe in transparency and hearing about Securus is just another door that opens for us to peak into. All calls are recorded, unless you go into a counselor's office and make the call from his/her phone. There's only an assurance of about 25% that - that call won't be recorded also. Something about counselors not wanting to have their personal and business calls recorded. Pass it on.

The cost of phone justice is a serious issue all over the country. I know there was a federal law passed by the FCC last year. I've included all of my experience in my book, "The Voice From Inside: Failure Brings New Knowledge," available on Amazon.

Pitifully, even attorney's can't do anything about their phone calls being recorded and most don't want to do anything. Attorney's are officers of the court first and your attorney a distant second.
