Then there was the whole prisoner strike for better conditions here in CA. If anyone NOT incarcerated were subjected to these conditions people would be in an uproar, but because they are prisoners - who cares?
What in the world is he doing in a place called "Gladiator School?"
I thought I remembered that he had a very short sentence. That place sounds like the medium I was at. Didn't he have a nonviolent marijuana charge or something like that?
With a very short sentence, he should be in a minimum security facility or a work camp. I cannot understand why he is where he is at.

I know you are worried, but from my experience with son and fiance being in jail and prison, they do adapt to their surroundings no matter how it is, better than we do thinking about them.
Keep busy. Start writing down everything. Start checking on all the statutes, laws, etc. It may help in the case, it may just help you get through this.
Be aware in many states, it is written right in the laws of the state, or whatever that you can not sue the prison. You can sue parties involved, but not the prison itself. They have it set up to protect themselves. I checked into this.
Then they may tell you that it had to be him that filed a complaint. Problem is to file a complaint as an inmate they have to get the forms from the guards. IF they actually will give them to you, then he has certain times to get them in, or they are not used. Of course usually they f They fill them out, and they somehow disappear. And it is dangerous to ask the guards. That is putting them on alert. It can be harmful to their existence in there.
They have sick sets of rules purposely to protect the prisons, and DOC. I have found out that no matter how wrong something is at those places, they pretty much have themselves covered, and you get nowhere.
BUT I did find a few things that would help in that 8th amendment and used it in a sneaky way. I wrote it in his letter, how it pertained to what they were doing. You know they read those. And miraculously a few days later the problems that he was having with them went away. Didn't hurt to mention I was going to contact the media.
Anyway, tread carefully and be very smart. Use everything you can, but expect to be disappointed unless you find a really smart and expensive lawyer.
You are exactly right, serving time should NOT be easy, but it SHOULD be humane. I swear, what are we, some third world country that can't afford decent facilities??? As much tax as they take out of my paycheck, I would think they can afford to at least fix the black mold and toilets, etc to protect the health of the inmates.
