First of all, just because he has another charge to now deal with----the one which could mean 4+ more years-----it does not necessarily mean that the 4+ years will be spent behind bars in prison. He could receive probation for this new offense, which would mean he would be out here with you.
If they do charge him with this new offense and he has some probation to serve after his release from prison, they can run the new charge concurrently with the probation. This would make it easy for both of you, as it would not lengthen his sentence.
Have your guy ask his attorney if this new charge can be run concurrent with his current charges. I know that some DAs will do this, as I have seen it done. I had a couple of prison buddies who caught new charges while they were in prison and the new charges were run concurrently with their current charges. As a result it did not affect their release date.

“Hello. I have a loved one who was convicted back in March for something. He recently went to court in May and was convicted on a new charge and sentenced to run concurrent with his current charge. Question, will the new charge start at conviction date in May or will he get credit for time served since March? New to the system and hope it isn't too dumb of a question! Thanks for your help!!!!!!”
If the DA will not run the new charges concurrently, he might be persuaded to handle the new charges with probation instead of prison.
Much depends on the state in which he committed this new offense, the nature of the crime, and the DA. If this new charge is a violent charge such as rape, assault, or robbery, then they may not run it concurrently or give him probation. But if the new offense is a property offense such as burglary, writing a bogus check, or some other non-violent crime, he may only receive a probationary sentence or have the new charges run concurrently with his current charges.
Hope this helps,
