This community is dedicated to families that have been disrupted by prison. Having a loved one incarcerated or having been incarcerated comes with its own unique challenges that require support and understanding. I know when I was on the inside the counselor gave me choice of going to the kitchen or garage. I said kitchen and he put me in the garage. I did not mind because I had knowledge in that field. I was able to go get the vehicles on the compound and do regular maintence inspections, change oil, do repairs as needed along with detailing the vehicles out. There were 15 of us in the shop. We were also in charge of snow removal in which we had to snow plow perimeter road which is the road the cops drive on all day long to patrol the mens medium security along with main roads around both prisons. Was able to learn how a snow truck with sand bucket on the back opperates. The only thing about snow plow that stunk was they called us at all various hours, past midnight hours. I had learned some new things and found it to be very interesting.
So, I thought for the heck of it we could share what our loved ones job description is and what they actually do. Please share if you know if he/she is finding it interesting or learning a new field. This gives everyone a chance to see what goes on during their day.

My husband is currently in the kitchen. He used to do the weekly menus along with ordering the food for the week. He just got moved up to the budgeting area. I guess the guy who was handling that got sent to the hole. My husband was doing both until they found someone to take my husband's place. Now he is training him. It is nothing new to him as he is a numbers guy. He said he likes doing both jobs and is able to learn the ordering and budgeting for 900 people. He states "it keeps me busy for most of the day and I like to stay busy".

I have nothing to add to this yet as my son is still awaiting sentencing to his permanent prison but I thought the jobs were interesting. I had no idea what inmates did. Anxious to hear what others have to say.

well dennis was washing dishes in the kitchen then moved to cleaning bathrooms i asked him if i was going to have the cleanist bathroom in town when he gets out and he told me h#*l no lol

My daughter was working in the bakery when she was in jail and she enjoyed the extra priviledges that she got regarding a good meal! Now in prison, she is scrubbing floors in the after hours. The midnight shift to be exact. I feel like there is something wrong there. She doesn't give me any indication that any thing is wrong but I don't understand why she has to scrub prison hall floors at midnight?? I am really concerned. I hate to ask too many questions with her counsler because my daughter has stated that this person is someone not to be trusted. Anyway, I am finally visiting her next Saturday and I can't wait to hug her. I will say that again..I am going to HUG my daughter on the 19th of this month and that will be my high for 2008!!!! So as a recap: my daughter's job is to scrub the prison hallway floors and my job is to HUG my daughter!!:) Yeah!!

Hey all. I don't know what my husband is going to be doing. He is still in the reception center. We know what his perm location will be, and every wednesday they send a new group...hopefully soon..cause he hates it there. He isn't a stranger to work so I'm sure that he'll be okay with whatever he does...it makes the day for faster for him...and that's a stress reliever for me. I read up on what they do there, and they have dog training, web design and stuff. He is going to some "honor camp" low security. He says that he won't even be in a cell anymore. Again...another stress reliever. I'll update as soon as I know more.

i did time on rikers island in ny (jail not prison). I had numerous jobs during my city year (8 months with good time). I worked in sewing 5 am -noon i think. We made the aprons for the men facility to wear (kitchen staff), it was kinda cool cause the c.o. let us watch tv and listen to the radio. i think that paid $14 per week. Later I did the STEP program which was a military boot camp that paid $25.00 per week, so i could pay my court fees (surcharge) because they had stopped my commissary. The job i enjoyed the most was the law library - the officer was cool, we talked about my family and stuff (human conversation) and he encouraged me to not come back to jail - change my life. and helping the other women was the most rewarding. many of them didn't speak english and i was able to translate spanish (muy poquito) and that was great! after a while, women were coming tot he law library just cause i was there, and they heard i was helpful. It also helped make the days go quicker for sure! but a job in prison is mandatory - not a choice.

My husband works in the kitchen of the SMUII (supermax unit) he cooks. He gets paid .35c an hour.

James works in the kitchen. He sets up the line for breakfast. So he works from 11p to 7a.

I just found out the other day that all the dressers,chest-of-drawers,and clothes closets at the nursing home I work at were all made in a prison by the inmates. I was amused,then I saw this post and thought I would let you all know! I dont know which facility they were made at but they are really pretty!

My daughter does laundry and gets 5 dollars a week of which 2 goes into savings and 3 is for her commissary. She doesn't really like it but she likes that she can do her own stuff and not have it be messed up or stolen. When she goes to prison she wants to do something in cosmetology and take courses when she is allowed. They also let her clean at night if she can't sleep. She gets along with most of the guards and they help keep her busy.

While in prison, Michael, was a dishwasher. He didn't mind cause he got to socialize more, but then used, " I had to wash dishes for 1000's of men, Kelly, everday" when trying to get out of washing them at home, before his violaton...lol

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
