Your son will be OK. The county is a terrible place to serve time, and he should be glad to get away from that environment. Prison is MUCH better. He will have much more freedom, the food is usually better, and the place is clean.
You will also be OK. I know it breaks a mother's heart, but both of you WILL make it through this.
Thousands and thousands of men and women have served time in prison and have made it through just fine. There is absolutely no reason your son cannot do the same. Yes, you will have bad days. That is to be expected, but he will be home someday soon.
No matter what your son is like, no matter if he is a first timer or a repeat offender, no matter if he is scared or not, no matter if he is an extrovert or an introvert, he will meet people in prison JUST LIKE HIMSELF. It is not like they will put him in there with hardened convicts and he will be the only first timer in there. Many others will be in the same boat-----scared, not knowing what to expect.
So many people are sent to prison these days for such minor crimes that prison has really become just a microcosm, a reflection of society. All kinds of people, most of whom are not violent and are harmless, will be there also.
Your son can take care of himself. I read your past posts and saw that he was arrested for drugs. Inmates on drug charges are very rarely harassed by the other inmates. Your son would have to try VERY HARD and put a lot of effort into doing something stupid in there for him to ever be harmed.
He will acclimate, get a job, and fall into a daily routine. Time will go by and he will come home.
Stay around these boards. These ladies here are going through the very same situation you have been asked to endure. They are good people and their advise is valuable.
There are some very wise ladies on this board.
Good luck and if you ever need me, you can message me anytime. I was in prison for many years, so I know about prisons and how inmates think.

The new guys would come in, make a friend or two, do their time and go home. Simple as that, especially with a drug charge.
I saw this with my own eyes and I would certainly never lie to you about it. He will do fine and, even though as a mother I know you will, you have little to worry about.
Remember---one day at a time.

My fiance couldn't wait to get out of county jail, and get to prison. He said county was awful. Nothing to do, awful food, and prison offered classes, exercise time, and many more things to do.
I know you are scared, with a new chapter starting. But according to my son, and fiance, prison is much better than county. You and him will be ok, you just don't believe that yet.
Nobody gets hurt in prison with drug charges unless they do something very, very stupid. The only way your son could get hurt would be one of these ways: 1) snitch or rat on another inmate. I know your son is smarter than that. 2) Get into debt and unable to pay. This can happen if the inmates starts gambling or buys some drugs or just runs up a big tab he cannot pay.
The interest rate in prison is pretty steep---you pay back two of every one thing your borrow, ie you borrow one package of soup, you pay back two packages. Or three for five if you borrow more at a time and they usually want what is owed them within a week. 3) get into a drug deal gone bad. 4) get mixed up the shemales. I have seen them fight over these he-shes.
Half the inmate population is on some kind of drug charges, so no problem there. The only problem occurs when an inmate at a MEDIUM is in prison for sex crimes or a crime against a child, ie child abuse. At minimums they don't care what you are in there for. They are at the tail end of their sentence and they want to go home, so they are not about to risk a misconduct by fighting with another inmate. That might cause them to lose some good time credits and delay their release or get them shipped to a medium, where nobody wants to go.
I have seen hundreds of guys with drug charges come and go. They never get hurt. The do their time and go home.
He will be fine, trust me. I have been there.
