I am often asked the question, "What are the best things I can send my loved one in prison to make his or her stay the easiest?"

Thank you for sharing this, Rew. I used to send these things, but now I am only allowed to send handwritten letters, and only up to five pages long. No printed material is accepted; no books, magazines, newspapers, or even typewritten or printed personal correspondence. No commissary money, except for postage and writing supplies. I miss being able to send him books and putting money on his commissary so he could buy even small things that helped him feel a little more "normal".

We can send books where he is now, I think. Nothing else, so canteen money is helpful. But at the next place we can send magazines, etc. And we can order things out of the catalog that is approved articles for them in that particular prison system. They can have sweats, undies, everything in the book. Even guitars, keyboards, harmonica's, etc. This catalog you click on the prison they are at and it will show you only things allowed at that prison. They are used in many states.

So for Christmas IF he was to be moved out of A & E by then, I could send him something from it. We do get the TV's and radios and other things from it too. If I order it, it only costs what they list. If he orders it using his money in his account, that money that I have to send him gets 35% taken out when I send it for gate fee and his judgment. It's such a rip off.

I do intend to send him a book soon. He is into reading books now. Has read 6 since sent to the prison a month ago. You just have it sent through the company.

It's different every prison system. Just check first.

I just had a couple books sent to him, but don't know if in this place he can have them or not. Two of them, didn't notice they were used, so probably will get refused or put in his property. The new one, maybe he can have. Don't know. So many stupid rules in this place that are different from the other prison he was in.

I am not even telling him. He has been so crabby the last few days, if he can't have them he will say YOU DON'T LISTEN, I can't have anything here, or don't spend money you need. I don't care, he is really enjoying reading lately, and since he is in a tiny room almost 24 hours a day, if it makes him have something to do, then fine, I sent them.

This place is going to make him crack up, I swear.
