So, here I am AGAIN! Yup, it's been a while, but our 23 year old seemed to be doing fine....it's been a long summer, he went 'back to school' AGAIN, for HVAC and Electrical to finish off what he got in the Navy.....he held a job, here and there, not much, not paying rent, his room became unruly again, the signs started. We went away, hubby and myself, for a weeks vaca with the family and put our new boat in the water up north for the week, it was hard to relax, we didn't tell him we where going, we just up and left lol....but the house was in tact when we got back....then I noticed the drinking....and for two weeks straight, he was drinking....okay, so our birthdays came and went, without alot of 'acknowledment' from the kid....hmmm.....last week, on a Sunday, it was a great day, hubby and I working on cleaning up the new boat, it was just a great day, I sat at the computer to relax for a bit, kid comes up 'I can't feel my leg, I have shortness of breath, Ma, I gotta get to the hospital...." OKAY, so I grab my keys and off we went. Turns out some info came about, he had been drinking and shooting coke....REALLY? He tells me this in a full ER waiting room. I kept my cool, verified the info from his hospital sheets, they gave him some anti biotics and something else, don't know what, he is an adult, so they tell me nothing.....we get in the car and HE KNOWS whats coming. I told him to pack his stuff and GET OUT! He said, okay in a couple weeks...couple weeks NOTHING...NOW...I gave him the night, in the morning, he got ready for school packed his stuff and he TRIED to argue the point, and when the voice started raising the hubby came in, he lowered his voice and out he went, he called every day for the first 4 days, everythings good, he's staying with a friend and he got a job part time....it's all good mom.....haven't heard a word in two days....
Now I KNOW I did the right thing....it's time, I'm cooked, done, stick a fork in me and I've resolved this will go one of two ways: He will either get his life together, or I will get that phone call. BUT I can tell you this, I refuse to feel guilty or sorry for him. He had EVERY chance under the sun to get help. I offered AGAIN to get him to a rehab, nope....okay then....there is the door, leave me the key and it's not a place to do your laundry etc....get a place to live and get your other stuff later.
And to boot his stupid butt birth father posts on FB "live closer to us'...REALLY? no child support the whole life of this kid, you use his ssn for your OWN dealings and you can't even pitch in?
On the flip side of things, we might be moving for work to another state. And there is NO WAY that kid is welcome to come with us!
I think the worst feeling we can have is that moment when you ask yourself: So THIS is what I worked my tail off all those years, buying used clothing for myself, skipping meals so HE can eat, sleepless nights wondering if I can pay all the bills on time......THIS is what he got out of all my teachings? And I KNOW it isn't me....it is HIS choice.
Drugs suck.....and our GOV doesn't acknowledge that this is now in epidemic proportions! The stories I've heard over the past few months of HOW MANY PEOPLE I KNOW are dealing with drug addicted adults or kids is staggering! It makes me sick to my stomach....
But I'm back in the throws of the feelings I KNOW I have to deal with and manage....
It's the 3rd time now and as he was leaving I told him this: This revolving door is now closed. I warned you over and over again. I tried to help you, WE tried to help you. And you've given your final answer. We love you, we wish you the best and we hope that you get your life together, but we will NO LONGER enable this behavior in our own home. " I kissed him on the cheek and took his key and closed the door.
God love my hubby, that afternoon, he did some errands, came back with two lobster rolls for me.....I hadn't cried, I was fine. But he was so afraid that I was falling apart. I'm not. I'm mad, I'm sad but I REFUSE to let him take us down with him. EVERYONE has a choice in this world of how they live their life. If that is HIS choice, so be it, but it will NOT be under our roof, on OUR dime. We work long hard days and never skip a beat. Don't know WHERE he got the lesson that he can sit on his ass and do nothing but reap the benefits.
So, now to get my rollercoaster of emotions in check, it takes some work to shut off the voices in my head, but I will not shut off the ones from my mom or my dad saying 'KUDOS kiddo, it ain't easy, but stick to your guns on this one!"....

I know some people eventually DO get it together. I hold out that hope for my daughter...but I totally agree with you: not in MY house, not on MY dime and absolutely NO enabling from me.
Good job, Mama!!
I think you and your husband got it,,,,, be there at the end when he chooses to be sober,, stand proud,,,, your right either he will meet you at the end of the line towards sobriety,, or quite possible he may never,,,,, we do not own this,,,,,
we got you covered,,,,,, release, relax,,,,, let go,,,,,
Love ya sister!
HMMMM....He told me he will call me with a new cell number as he is dumping the current number, he just wants to have NO contact with all those 'friends' that he ran with.
Hmmm.....so he checked in to the facility, he said and let's see where this goes. It's not a place where they are 'tied' to stay in there like a rehab. They have 'rules' that they follow, so he can still go to school. Which is great, he has a 95 average and I don't want him to lose that 'momentum' with his classes.
And on the flip side of ALL of this going on, the hubby has a company that has been after him since '98 lol and they have an offer for him they are presenting on wed. This will take us out of state and having to sell the house, find a new house etc....BIG move...but exciting. Our son knows all this. And he also knows that we are NOT offering him to move with us. So maybe THAT is the trigger for him realizing he can't go on in his current state any longer? I'm a little anxious at this point from all that is going on in my life. Although a new 'chapter' I feel, is truly needed. Not 'running' but starting over in a place we LOVE to go for vacations, etc, all year round....it will allow me to 'calm' my schedule down and pay more attention to hubby and myself. A new start in a small but beautiful place.....
Oh, They say 'he only gives you as much as you can handle' WELL, HE must think I'm a BAD ASS! lol.....
Thanks all, even though I haven't been here in MONTHS, it's an awesome feeling knowing I can pour it all out and you're all here to have my back...I just wish it was in better circumstances for all of us.
CARDINAL: I see you ALL the time on my back hill and KNOW that I still smile everytime I see them stopping by.
The video is based the book "Stay Close" written by Libby Cataldi and her son, Jeff, and it's about their journey through his heroin addiction.
Although it's normal to not to feel sorry for them or angry because of their "choices" when they refuse to get help ~ after living through this with two sons and after a lot help and prayer ~ I have found another way to interact with my sons and what a difference!
It's not to say we allow them to manipulate us or that we enable them but to continuously remind them know that we love them. This is something that is not stressed enough. Hard to say sometimes when they have hurt us so much but as Libby says what her son says "Addicts loath themselves". I believe that if we remind them that they're lazy or if we point out all the things they do wrong - will only cause them to want to use more. They have reason to because they hear what losers they are. And this is supposed to motivate them to stop?
Love the addict - hate the disease is a message I hear time and time again that helps remind me that it's the disease talking - not my sons.
And since I've become healthier - what a difference it's made with our relationships.
My alcoholic 24 year old middle guy (who doesn't live with us) felt comfortable enough to come to us to say that he was also a heroin addict that started with his prescription pain meds over 2 years ago.
Mind you - he was arrested and needed my husband's signature to get his car back but we had a heartfelt conversation with him about his situation. A conversation that would not have happened a few years ago.
He said he wanted help but I took it as - he wants to do it. And so far so good. He detoxed himself and saved money for his lawyer! He set up a date for an assessment. Prior to this arrest or "God intervention" ~ he was working 3 jobs to support his habit. Now with one job he's been able to save in a short period of time for his lawyer. And is working extra so that he can pay for his court fees.
He knows that we will not enable (husband set him up with lawyer and I wasn't happy with that because I thought that that inferred we would pay) but my son is taking on the responsibility because I told him he needed to.
So what I'm saying is ~ it's so good that when we close the physical door of our home but we are not closing the door to our hearts.
My good friend used to meet her son (who was living on the streets) and they'd have lunch together. She would pray with him and pray for him - for a "God intervention". He knew he had her as cheerleader. This mom became my mentor and it was so comforting. She didn't stay in the way of his consequences - but he knew he had her support. Today after being hooked on heroin for 15 years - has been clean and sober for 8 months. He tells her it's because of her support and thanks her everyday for it.
I hope and pray for all of you. Being a parent or loved one of an addict or alcoholic is not easy. They hurt us - we hurt. Thankfully, we have the power to get help ourselves. By doing so - our addicts stand a much better chance.
((((HUGS)))))
I told him I was proud that he took this first big step and he asked me to pray for him, I told him I do every minute of the day.
They did all physical work ups on him yesterday and friday he will meet with the mental health group and they will begin testing and doing the dual diagnosis procedures. I was happy to hear that.
I didn't preach, I didn't scold. He made one statement that he wished he could go back in time and not ever start doing drugs. And he did mention he would like to get himself squared away and then go back in the service.
He knows I love him, but knows I don't love the addict.
Only God knows what will happen from here. I just feel awful as he really likes his school and classes, but may have to put it on hold to go through the processes at the home.
At least I know he has a place to lay his head and is working to get himself better and that he is finally fed up with his lifestyle.
I'll pray, but I won't cry, I will keep hope in my heart.
So I get a text 'can I come home and do some laundry?'.....#1- Home? okay I get it, habits die hard....#2 - it will cost you MORE in gas money to get home than the 1.50 per load....so I called him, he was in an upbeat mood, telling me about his day, then I told him that it would cost less to just do his laundry there than pay for gas, he says 'i didn't know it would be such a big freaking deal'....I told him it wasn't that, it was the cost for gas...AND that he had to start figuring out HOW to take care of these things on his own and not expecting to come 'back to our house' (the way I put it) to get stuff done at a higher cost than to do it where he is at.....he got pissed and hung up on me.....
LOL...funny part is I know this game OH SO WELL, I'm not falling for it anymore, then it would be 'can I just stay the night'....blah blah blah.....
Sad part is, he was so jazzed up about some people he met and talking a mile a minute, all that was in my head was 'is he high?'.....I can't stop the negative thoughts, I don't speak them, but...hate thinking them....
I'm up and down constantly and I've GOT TO STOP.
I hate this totally...part of me wants to end ALL communication.....being a parent SUCKS at times....and more often than not.
Well, I'm done venting, sort of, for now....today is the day we should hear whether we are moving or not....and oh yeah the hubby has done a total shut down...he doesn't want to talk about the possibility right now, blah blah blah.....I'm in a boat, all alone, with one freaking broken down oar....that's how I'm feeling....and the clouds are getting thick and the seas a kicking up....let's see how the rest of the day plays out.....
I hope everyone has a good day.....thanks for being here! (just wish it didn't have to be under these circumstances).....
So I told our son.....yesterday we had SO much to do, so little time, and I get texts: Apparently I had some kind of seizure when they gave me the TB shot during orientation, they are rushing me to the hospital. THAT was the 1st text....now I know this kid and shots, he passes out, but not like 'normal' people. His eyes roll and it DOES look like a seizure. He knows it, I know it...it happened that night at the hospital (imagine that, and he can shoot heroin or coke though????). So then the next text: I can't stand this place now, it's all stupid crap, I have no money, no clean clothes, (it goes on))...I never replied.
I'm just so done with drama. He lvm later saying all was well, sorry for the drama text, etc.....
He was so pissed about my comments on doing laundry here. but yet he finds time to hang with some friends he knows in the city, met a girl from another state, blah blah blah...how about FIND A JOB! When is he going to get it?
I feel badly moving hundreds of miles away at this point. But not for nothing, I can't live my life around his addictions and drama anymore....
I guess you could say I'm REALLY cutting the cord.....
So naturally I had a melt down, all of this combined with his drama sent me into a fit of rage and tears. Poor hubby, he had NO idea of the texts, till i told him, before he thought it was the move. It's NOT the move. It's my own stupid 'guilt' feelings, which I will NOT acknowledge anymore....I shouldn't have ANY guilt about wanting to live my own life. I reFUSE to let that kids issues run my life anymore. I know it sounds really selfish, But isn't HE a bit selfish himself expecting US to fix his problems? I got my own to worry about. Right? am I wrong?
Arg....
