I would talk to your local mental heath places. Ask them what they know and tell them your situation. I had to do that with my hubby. Good luck to you and I wish you and your family the best!!

I'm sorry you are going through this. I just finished a second round of rehab with my 20 year old son, so this is fresh in my mind.

Talk to your health insurance company first. With our HMO there is a contract provider for AODA treatment. They provide counseling and outpatient treatment. In order to get in patient treatment covered by insurance, the contract provider for out patient treatment has to write a referral. And, there is only one contract provider for out patient treatment. So, for us, it would have been pointless to research rehab centers.

Has he tried outpatient AODA therapy? Often that is the first step. It's the less drastic option and it can be very helpful and less expensive. He may also be more willing to go.

you can look into teen challenge in your area. it's very structured,inexpensive,and many have open houses so you can see it before you decide. it's not lock down. it works for many and if it doesn'twork for you they will drive you to the bus stop. you are not forced to stay

my son is in tc and his friend has depression and anxiety and is doing well there also. the men are a great support to each other :)

I sometimes feel that being away from his home town may be better. To get away from the influences he has here. So much to figure out.

teen challenge. they are all over the world. it's a one year christian program and i know of 4 men that have overcome their addictions through the program and the power of God.
there is at least one in your area. google it!

Hi lamrock, my son is also in TC. It is an excellent program and everything Jainlor said is absolutely true. My son went in on his own and could not afford to pay. They dont turn anyone away.

my son was not working, lost his apartment and got on medicaid and then to a homless shelter run by friar monks....St. Christopher's. I loved the program there. Salvation army has stuff, lots of places have programs, when they are over 18 and indigent.
anyplace can be better than being in our homes, when they make the choice to get better.

Thank you all. I am just getting it through my head that I have to let go. Every bit of this is so scary. I am getting that he has to fall hard before he will ever be ready to want to get better. I hope the day comes where he wants to get better.

Contact your insurance carrier to see what is and is not paid for. Then what I did is i did some homework, rehab facilities are like searching for a hotel in all honesty. What are the ancillary things you are seeking beyond just detox, and counseling. The owner of my company whos son is an addict and is diabetic from birth went to a facility in MD, Father Martens and they had the knowledge of diabetes and addiction. My son went to IOP which I believe they must be very commmitted to, and then went to Florida and the facility used traditional and very up to date alternative therpaies, all coupled together, which I really liked. The important thing is what you keep saying you can send him to the "so called" best, most expensive facility but until he has made the commitment to wan to be sober, you can hold sessions in your own home. I hope he gets to that place that he is ready. I hope I can do (or not do) what I need to in order for him to get there. Listening to all of your words of advice has been the best medicine for me.

Good question how do we go through this,,, well for me,,, started off with a lot of crying, wondering how this could happen to our beautiful 23 year old daughter,, the insanity I went through trying with every once of energy in me to fix her,, seriously one day I had a one person pitty party, realize that everything I was doing to try a fix her was just feeding into her addiction,,,, I put my big girl pants on and got a helium balloon put her name on it,, and surrendered, never gave up hope, and will be standing at the finish line with open arms, waiting for my daughter to find her own way back home, it takes patience, reprogramming our own minds,, to let go,,, I kept catching her has she was almost reaching the bottom,,,
Time is also essential ,, stop giving in,, managing the area we live in,, certainly will never Beable to control the addict
