Hi -- I'm planning a business trip to New York City and it's likely that my rather short return flight home will be on 9/11. It brings up a bit of anxiety to be sure, but it's not a trigger of any personal harm I've experienced. I haven't had that in my life. My PTSD is from emotional abuse perpetrated over the years by several people close to me.
Initially I was just going to ask here whether those suffering from personal, more one-on-one forms of PTSD would feel more anxiety about traveling on that anniversary day. It's a valid question.
But it's a much larger issue, the inhuman randomness of terrorism. So many US citizens had their sense of security threatened by 9/11, the horrors that could happen here in addition to the images of international news that people may shield themselves from. Maybe we subconsciously make it more mythical, as if watching something fictionalized because it's all we can handle. (Which begs the question of why there is blood lust in movies, videos and contact sports.)
I'm sure we can't make a broad generalization that those in war-torn countries are hardened to the horrific experiences. And the media at its best realizes the human aspect of innocent suffering.
Just rambling a bit here, trying to make sense of senseless tragedy and the loss of a basic reverence for another person's life, another countries' lives. And how sad that no nation is apparently free of manslaughter in their history.
