I understand a mother's love. My son is in treatment, but I know it's a long road ahead, a scary road. I want my baby back as well. I will say a prayer for you and for your son. Behind his addiction is a lot of shame and pain, and a hurting mom too. May he come to know that he is a worthwhile person, and get the help he needs. It's there for him.

my brothers name was jimmy and he died of an overdose two years ago and when I read your letter his name brought tears to my eyes wishing he was here. I begged and pleaded with him to stop for years and it didn't work. However he did go to a rehab and shortly after he was discharged he died. His body was clean and he thought he could start where he left off. You are very strong to have written that letter. Good Luck to you and your family.

When the real boy is wrapped within the addict it's hard to seperate them. It looks and sounds like our child but its not him. We see our children but there is this ugly wrapping of addiction.

I know what you are going through. Accepting that they're is nothing we can do to convince them to get help is one of the most painful realities. Then doing what's best hurts like hell.

I've said "if it feels wrong it's right" doing what's right in regards to our active addict, goes against every instinct we have.

When our children are hungry, hurting or needy, we want to fix it, make it all better but we can't. You are doing the right thing here.

Jimmy is sitting in a jail cell. My heart is heavy and broken but I am at work, functioning and going to see my therapist. Jimmy will have to deal with this one on his own.

Mallen, only those of us who have been through this truly understand. My son was in jail from Sept. 27 - April 19. I had such high hopes that he would take advantage of the opportunity for a six-month rehab after his release. Sadly, he never showed up. My heart is broken, too, and there is an emptiness because I don't know where he is ... whether he is even alive. I have to go on, though, and think "no news is good news." Some of my friends don' get it. They don't understand how I can not "help" him more. I helped so much and to no avail. He has to help himself. I wish he had not turned his back on this opportunity. McAllen I'm sorry it had to come to this but maybe just maybe this could be what he needed to see what his addiction has done to him? My son was arrested in January and I know the painful emotions you are going through. It sucks but in my sons case I did let him sit there for a bit even though it killed me I knew it had to be done to give him a little taste if his future if he doesn't stop using drugs. It's going on 5 months of him not using drugs I will not lie it has been far from perfect but it is a continuing process that I hope in the end buys him enough time to remain drug free to heal and mature and break old habits and friendships that were not good for him. I can say nothing my husband and I did prior to his arrest worked for two years plus I beat my head against a wall trying like hell to stop him we all know the deal threats rehab no car priveleges etc nothing really worked but when he had to feel the pain of his actions a lightbulb finally went off in his head so I can say I'm glad he got arrested I know far too many that are visiting a graveyard instead of an inmate. I will continue to hold you all in my prayers as well as all the addicts and families of them everywhere. On a side note I don't think any of us could understand the tough love approach if addiction unless we have lived through it so I think your friends that don't get it should count their lucky stars that they are fortunate enough not to have to understand it.
