People addicted to drugs can never be helped and if we try we only destroy ourselves in the process. Your ability to make hard emotional decisions like this and stick to them, will lead to a bright future.
I have to find peace and calm in my life and for my kids. Here are the things that have helped me start the process:
1) I called a lawyer, separation agreement in the works (I made myself "act" on my wish to leave)
2) I wrote myself a heartfelt letter, acknowledging the pain and fear of ending this. I also reminded myself of all of the times I overcame huge issues in my life. I told me I deserved happiness and peace. I read it every day and when I get worried about the future, I pull it out and read it again.
3) I deserve peace, so do you. I tell myself you can't have that in your life with a substance abuser.
4) I have come to realize that the unknown is better than the known. That I'm trading in certainty for uncertainty. If I want peace, I HAVE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
5) I found some good sayings: "Fear is what stops you, Courage is what keeps you going." "Faith is the opposite of doubt." I read these too.
6) I see a counsellor, have some close friends and use this site. You can't do this alone.
7) Reassure yourself that you will get through this
8) Our alcoholics/addicts won't get clean with us there. Sometimes it takes us leaving for them to change, BUT that's not why you leave. You leave so you can have a better life. If he gets healthy then maybe you have a chance at a healthy relationship. But don't hold your breath.
9) Cry when you need to, one step and one day at a time. In as much as it is difficult for the substance abuser to give up their drug of choice, we too are going thru the same thing. giving them up.
I do believe a better life awaits us. I wish you well on your journey.
