So my son who just moved into a sober living house on Monday went to his first meeting . He has always hated these meetings and avoided them like the plague but one of the stipulations of the sober house is he must attend 90 meetings in 90 days. My son suffers from severe anxiety but is now being medicated for the first time for it so he is feeling pretty good. So he went to the meeting and said he was really uncomfortable and had an anxiety attack at one point and had to go sit outside for a bit. He told his roommate about it and his roommate told him the same thing happened to him and that the only way around that was to speak. Tell the other folks how uncomfortable you feel and then suddenly you don't feel so bad. My son said he was going to try it tonight, I hope he does! This is where he always messes up. The treatment part makes him fall apart because everyone tells him to start talking about himself and he just can't seem to do this. He is fine one on one but groups of people freak him out. I wish there was not so much emphasis on talking through the recovery. I know it is so necessary but this is something my son can't seem to do. I gave him lots of encouragement and told him how proud of him I am but I seriously doubt he will be able to actually speak at his meeting tonight. oh and he got a sponser first time EVER!! so thats a good thing.
