I need to say this outloud:
I certainly didnt cause it, I realize I cant control it, and Im not god to cure it.
Since early September weve been waiting on my brother to act on his words, ie join outpatient rehab. I didnt hold my breath, although my heart stomped when my mother told me he said that he is joining rehab. Good thing for me cause Id been holding my breath from almost two months. Tomorrow he is supposed to take his first hit of methadone.
I am not an expert, I have read a lot, but I am not in any position to have a solid opinion about methadone. All I know is that in the beginning he told my parents they were going to give him buprenorphine with naloxone, but for some uknown to us reason, there was this switch to methadone.
Here, rehab centres are public. Private ones do exist but only at the margin of the law. They recently changed the way public rehabs operate, so instead of going to the rehab centre per se, you actually go to a hospital to get your medicine. This is a good thing. There was a lot, and I mean A LOT of drug trafficking around those outpatient rehab centres. It was as if all the zombies and outcasts of the city gathered around these small clinics. I had escorted my brother to a couple of them, years ago.
My poor, sweet parents are so happy about my wedding and I know that in their heart they have secret hopes about my brother getting better. I try to keep my cool, neither feeding their hopes, nor crashing them. When I asked my mother today any news from my brother? she burst into tears, I know these tears, they are made of unspoken hope, the kind of hope that fills your heart like heroin fills the empty shell of the addict.
Im striving here.. I try not to come to DS too often in an effort to give myself a break and focus on the wedding preparations. But here I am cause I see hope flying all around and thats not a good thing, is it?
For all I know, he and the no-worth girlfriend [yes, I still don't like that person at all] could find a way to get high on methadone or smuggle it and sell it. Even before his starting day he asked my father for a gift. I need a guitar dad, he said. He has sold all three [or four] guitars my father has bought him the past couple of years.
I dont need to have my hopes raised up high here. Its a tough day for me today. I know I can handle the emotional overflow Thanks for reading.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Hope never really dies, I just don't want to fall in the trap of high expectations like before. I think I'm going to be fine..
We are here for you,,, together we circle around you for strength!!
I too have hope..... My 23yo daughter has a heroin addiction that started 6 yrs ago. As a result, she has managed to get herself into a lot of legal trouble. She has been to rehab 4-5 times this year alone and every time, I have hope. But she goes right back to it. She has been using rehab as a hiding place from her legal issues. She went into detox Monday because she had court Tuesday. She said she would be dirty (urine) and go straight to jail. I'm starting to think that she might need to go to jail... Hate to say it
Actually, cardinal, you're right, my thoughts are on the preparations. All this planning is like a life line, not only for me but also for my mother.
Yesterday evening my brother came home. I was not there. He stayed for a couple of hours. My parents said he looked better and that he asked to take his "good" clothes, clothes he had received as gifts from me and my mom. He used to hate them because they looked too formal for him, although they were just shirts and non-jean trousers.. Anyway. My guess is that he either feels that he has to be somewhat presentable now that he starting the visitations to the hospital to get his methadone or that he needs money, so there go the clothes...
Thankfully, my parents didn't give him any money. Only my dad, told him he is going to get him new glasses. He's been without glasses for two years now, he broke them. Is that enabling? I'm not sure..
I don't think he is going to follow through the 6 month methadone programme. He admitted he is still using, but "only the minimum ammount". When asked, he was not clear about whether his g/f is still using, so, yes, she is using.
I used to hope that the social services would take the child away from them. I have no hope left for the child. She is being raised in a filthy, drug environment by two people who are addicts and have no job, so it's pretty obvious how they sustain themselves.
The only thing that would convince me that he really wants out of this life is if he left that place and the g/f. As long as he stays there, hope is limited, almost minimal.
I have to fight my own demons now that he made contact with my parents. Three years ago, I was about to get married but we cancelled the wedding because he had news: his g/f was 5 months into her pregnancry and of course, she was using big time. He left home still to be seen again by me. We collapsed. It took me some time to get on my feet again. My mother went on heavy medication.
Now, that I'm preparing my wedding for the second time, he has more news: the methadone programme and the child's baptism. My parents were so happy for these past few weeks. I hadn't seen them smiling for years. My mother was crying last night [story in my journal] and she had the voice of depression coming back.
Childish as it may sound, I feel that he's again getting all the attention and energy from my parents. That's why I'm saying I have to fight my own demons now.. I am thirsty for happiness and normality.
How is your daughter doing? Do you keep contact with her?
