if she has all those behaviors, I would say she needs to work on the root cause...what is she trying not to feel? yes, she could be addicted to the rush, like gambling. and certainly there has been studies done that one addiction can lead to another.

If she faces one addiction, she may uncover why she is developing all these others....

She was clean from crack for over two years. Went to prison, to rehab, to a living sober facility and back into mainstream life. She has relapsed a few times since she left the living sober program.

She is addicted to crack, pot (people say its not addictive but I say the feeling is), alcohol, stealing, E, and probably anything else she can put in her mouth that may make her forget herself.

She is diagnosed bipolar, but I think there is more going on inside her for all the self medicating. She has always been a difficult person. And she sees a counseller regularily but it seems like all the counseller does is molly coddle her instead of getting to the bottom of all these horrible behaviours and addictions.

However, the stealing got her caught recentley and she may be facing more jail time, so forced sobriety.

There was a big discussion on a separate board of bipolar...does addiction cause it? are they more likely to become addicts? certainly on that board many thought that they were self medicating and that they got better with their meds when they did not use any alcohol or drugs.
It certainly complicates things. If she gets sober, her meds may be better able to help. I hope it is not thru jail...but if it is, I hope she makes a plan for recovery for when she gets out.

Is it possible for you to not think about her and her issues? To focus on you? You might say if you could you would, but I have to ask..

The answer to your question is Yes, can she have another addiction. Yes. Addiction is not just a mental disease it is behavioral and until she can embracing changing the people, place and things, she can very easily give up one addiction for another, basically just swapping. That is why addiction specialists are so adamant on not drinking if addicited to drugs. Addiction no matter what it is sucks. Keep strong.

Ive spent the last few years focusing on me and mine. Just lately she has gotten under my skin and got me curious about wether its possible to be addicted to stealing or not :)

I believe the answer is yes. My 18 yr old son has a huge problem with stealing which started when he was very young (toddler years) and no matter how much we punished him it only got worse over time. We sent him to counseling and therapy but nothing helped because he never took it seriously, opened himself up to treatment or saw it as a problem. He's also a drug addict and has been diagnosed as borderline bi-polar, OCD "over compulsive disorder" and ADHD to name a few along with a criminal record several miles long. It's a sad story and for the past 5-6 years he's put us through enough hell and embarrassment to last a dozen lifetimes and we finally had enough after his latest break-in and arrest made the local press. So we told him he was kicked out of our home and more importantly our lives until he makes a good faith effort to get treatment and change his life because we can't live on his self-made roller coaster. The 3 things I learned from the folks on this site is that no matter the addiction, it is important for not only the addict but you as well, to (1) set rules & boundaries and (2) stick to them. By your comment I see you've already done that so for us, the non-addicts, we (3) embrace and understand the 3 "C's" of addiction: you didn't cause it, you can't control it nor can you cure it. So for now my advice is to separate yourself from it and live your life to the fullest otherwise you'll just drive yourself crazy.
