I have never before posted in an online forum but am needing some help or support from people who have been there. I have been married for 18 years to a man who is overcome by depression. While his level of depression fluctuates we have recently hit an all time low. For years I have begged and pleaded with him to get help and he finally agreed to take medication in April. The last one he was on had the opposite effect and he became irrational, moody, emotional, impulsive etc. I hung on and tried to shelter our kids (15&11) as best I could and encouraged him to see his dr. He continued to spiral and it came to a head on September 9 when he attempted to take his life in our home. I had a gut feeling and returned to the house in time to call the paramedics and he is home now and is in treatment.

The day after the attempt, I found out he had been having an affair with my best friend (his best friends wife). I was crushed. After several conversations we decided he would come home and stay in the spare bedroom, get treated and work on his mental health. When he was in a better place, we would deal with our marriage.

I love this man. He loves me as best he can. I am trying to be patient and supportive but he is still so far away. And I am so angry and hurt. He is acting like a 20 year old bachelor, coming and going as he pleases, spending money like crazy. He keeps saying he doesn’t see us working out because I deserve more and he’ll never be good enough for me. 

Has anyone gone through anything similar? Is there light at the end of this tunnel? I realize it’s only been a couple weeks but when should I see improvement?
