Esophageal Cancer Support Group
Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes. Esophageal tumors usually lead to dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), pain and other symptoms, and is diagnosed with biopsy. Small and localized tumors are treated with surgery, and advanced tumors are treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combinations.
My husband was diagnosed a year ago. He started with chemo and radiation. The radiation effects were mild to begin with and got worse toward toward the end. He had side effects from the chemo, but they were relatively mild his first round of chemo. He had surgery in July and started a second round of chemo which made him very ill. It brought him close to death, but we're told the oncologist was very aggressive the second time.
I'm told that the individual's age makes a difference. My husband was 70 when he was diagnosed so it may be why he was hit so hard.
I never asked for a prognosis either. I did not want anyone giving me statistics. If you continue coming to this site you will see that there are people who were diagnosed with all stages. There are people who have survived stage IV.
I think the best thing to to develop your plan of action. Find doctors that are experienced and that you are comfortable with. In our case, the oncologist really coordinated all the healthcare for my husband. He's a wonderful doctor and I don't know what we would have done without him.
My husband is finally doing well, but he had quite a few complications that's caused multiple hospitalizations. It's been quite a year. He's eating almost anything now. He has to take a med to increase his appetite. He lost 80 lbs. He's started doing things around the home and in the garden again. We're able to take day trips again, but he still feels too weak for a long trip.
So, in brief, that's our story. Everyones' story is different. There are wonderful people on this site. I'm glad you found it and I wish you, your husband, and your daughter the best.

For us, I just want this all to be worth it, and give us some real time...not just a few more months. We are also going to add Shiatsu massages for him.
I hope you both can continue to heal and enjoy life. Thanks for the response!
