Hi there, I know what you mean, I just had right temprol lobe surery in May this year and I was actually had the same thoughts. What happen to me is you have to go for a telematry test which is an induced seizure at a lower medication taken during this time, while your having the seizure they will inject you with a drug called Ceretc that will hightlight the area that is having the problem in what ever area of the brain the problem is happening as I was told this drug highlights the area the induced blood flow from the seizure area is shown in a MRI scan one hour after the seizure. If you a sucessful to have the surgery, what happen to me was that I had 6 hour surgery and then was placed into the ICU for 3 days then was allowed home after I past certain criteria to go home, but I have to say the first two weeks were hard then slowly but surely I got better day by day and have been seizure free since the operation.

After 32+ years of epilepsy and seiz. last yr. my Dr. told me that it was probably time for surgery. Quite honestly I agreed. Shortly after that I started the testing, then all of a sudden things started going crazy. My 15 yr. old son ran away from home, I had an accident at work, my daughter had an accident and broke her leg needing surg...etc...etc..(it really did get worse). The bills began to pile, so we decided that maybe we should wait. My seiz. also became worse. I had seen an episode on the news about a women almost in the same situation as me and decided to look for clinical trials needing people to help with their research projects. I found one that was perfect for me. They are comparing 2 different surgerys; real surgerys that are often done, to prove that one of them was just as good as the other, but cheaper. I checked it out and was told I qualified. The thing is was that it had not yet started. I was checking daily since march, but had to realize that I couldn't keep that up. They finally called me today, letting me know that I am still on the list and that the research project was going to be happening withen the next 6 months. Yes, surgery sounds "VERY" scary, but when you've had to deal with it for as long as I have, getting news like this makes me happier than anything I could possibly imagine. How long have you been having seiz.? You have to concentrate on the good that could come from this. All I can think of is how this is going to change my life for the good.

Right now, I am also going through the testing for the surgery, but don't worry about being teased, just worry about being better. Okay. I was really scared at first like you were, but it also caused alot of anxiety in my life that I did not need, and took me from alot of important things that could help me in life. All I can say if focus on the positives on the surgery, like I am and do not think about what others are going to think about you. I hope this helped you. I have a neighbor who had surgery to control her seizures, and it went very well. She'd been having seizures despite multiple meds; after the surgery, she's needed only a relatively low dose of tegretol. She's now been seizure free for a couple of yrs and is looking into reducing that, maybe even getting off it. She was in the hospital for a couple of days, then I think stayed w/ a family member for a wk or so - we live on a small island, so staying off in this kind of situation makes sense.

My neurologist has recommended that I look into it; I have an appt in Boston on Mem Day w/e.

You know what, I can't WAIT to have surgery! I am waiting right now because of for this clinical research project that is supposed to be happening within the next few months, the thing is though I may not wait for them. I was taking 3 different meds. vimpat, keppra, and lamictal. I decided I didn't want to be on vimpat anymore and that I would rather take depakote. Well, the doc. said ok and decided to of course do the increase gradually, but all at once. I was taking 5 different meds. at once. I was afraid to take my meds cause it would literally knock me for a loop...Long story short...I ended up in bed for almost a week due to medication overdose. I've been off the vimpat for 48 hrs. and the depakote for 3 days. It's pretty much out of my system, I can at least get out of bed and walk around, but I still feel light-headed if I get up/down too fast or if I walk too much and my balance is still a little off. I don't know if this feeling will stay with me forever now, but I do know that I want that surgery now and get the HELL off all the meds. I know I will probably have to take some, but I'm pretty sure I won't be prescribed too many.

I had successful right temporal lobe surgery in Janary 1991 after having seizures from the age of 14 months due to a high fever. In the 1960's surgery wasn't even discuses as openly as it is today and doctor's were hush hush about alot of things, even to the point where they would tell my parents that they were imaging things and that there was nothing wrong with me. Until I suffered a seizure in the doctor's office one day and voila, they had a diagnosis by the time I was 8.

I had right temporal surgery and I didnt have any problems and havent had any seizures for 6 years. As for not telling your mom I understand. Dont go thru this alone. Find a family member that will hold your hand and give you a hug when you get worried. As far as being worried about the bald look dont give it a second thought. My boys asked the Dr. if they could have what he removed and he told them no, BUT he told them to bring in a camera and he will take pictures. Any time they tell me I lost my mind I tell them I had pictures of mine can they prove they have one. My best advice to you is have fun with it and let them have fun. My wife got me a bunch of different wigs an I would put a different one on every day. By having fun you can give your mom some piece of mind. It will make her happy to know you are O.K. with things. My wife just had Kemo and lost her hair. Before she started the kemo the entire track team from my kids school came to my house and shaved their heads bald. They wanted to show MOM there wasnt anything wrong with going bald. Talk to your brother and tell him you need his support and tell him you are scared and could really use his help. Be true full and tell him what you are concerned with and cry on his shoulder if you need to.
