It hurts when I bear down to poop if I don't take laxatives/stool softeners beforehand. Is there anything I can do to strengthen that area down there so it doesn't hurt so much when I try to poop naturally? I don't want to get hooked on laxatives (I heard you can get "hooked" on them, where your bowels won't move if you don't take the laxative). I heard of Pelvic Exercises, but are those meant for this purpose? Remember, I'm totally new to this stuff. This was my first ever surgery, so any help is appreciated.

You could try a super high fiber diet?
I was having the same problem last winter (the pain medication I was on made me super constipated on top of that) but I went through two boxes of Frosted Mini Wheats a week and it helped TONS when combined with a stool softener

I'm eating alot of Activia yogurt and high fiber oatmeal every day, plus a fiber bar for a snack. Maybe I'll have to try some fiber in my larger dinner meals.

While I still have some problems, my GI issues have improved greatly as I started a gluten-free/dairy-free diet. I don't know if it would help your issues - I had constant diarrhea which has cleared up almost entirely with my diet change. Now I occasionally have the opposite issue and stool softeners seem to help somewhat. I hope you can find some relief. It is no fun to dread every trip to the bathroom!

I also had that problem about pooing natural since being on my medication for the last 12yrs my gp finally gave me a high fibre drink and it helps me alot i am not taking it for life becasue i am on my medication for life

My mom uses this tea called Smooth Move and she likes it alot and she cant poop for days if she doesnt drink this

Smooth Move? I'll look that up. Anything that's not a laxative is good in my book. Fiber is preferred. The natural way to get things moving is the best way, my doctor said. She told me to try Gas X, but all thats doing is making me...uhm...fart a lot. Smelly ones, too, since I haven't been able to go in a day or two. I went a little this morning, thanks to the two laxative I took last night, but it wasn't much.

I have this too, but have been able to help it a lot. I eat pretty good so that's one of the reason, but also I started eating yoplay yogurt a couple days a week and on the days I don't do that, I drink cranberry juice. I know its a lot, but it does help.

try taking a probiotic, you'd have to eat a gallon of yogurt to equal one pill, it really works.

You can try fiber pills once or twice a day and that should have you going once a day.

Also, when nothing else is working I also drink prune juice. I usually put it in a small cup and dilute it with a bit of water. Watch out though this stuff is potent. (If you know what I mean.) And make sure your drinking enough, dehydration can make you very constipated. Most people won't even know their dehydrated.
