About a month ago I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a 6cm cyst on my right ovary. The doctor recommended a wait and see method and asked me to think about going back on birth control because currently I'm not taking any. The problem is the cyst is causing a lot of symptoms: nausea, bloating, bladder pressure, and lots of pain. I'm an elementary teacher, and I've had to step out of my classroom a few times and lie down for a little bit because the pain is so bad. I know surgery should not be a first option, but I feel like it's not worth the pain, and I'd rather have surgery sooner rather than later. Has anyone ever had a cyst this size that has shrunk on it's own? Also, a few years ago, I had a smaller cyst (4cm) removed, and it was a chocolate cyst.

I had one the size of a large egg... so probably 4.5 cm... and that one didn't go away. They were worried that it would twist my ovary which would mean that my ovary would have to be removed. So the dr on call made the choice to do surgery... I wouldn't wait too long before considering a different approach.

We watched mine for 3 years and it never went away. At first it didn't cause any symptoms so I didn't mind waiting, then I lost insurance so all I really could do was wait hehe. It was an endometrioma, 3.5cm inside my left ovary. I wasn't on BC most of the time though.

I had a 5cm cyst last year, it did go away on its own :)

Yes, any cyst smaller than 7 cm (or was it 10?) is a candidate for shrinking on its own. They usually only remove cysts if they are over that size or stay put for months and are causing problems.

I get cysts constantly. 1cm, 4 cm, 3 cm...I also had one 7 cm cyst. Most went away on their own. The 7 CM cyst was removed in surgery because they thought it was 10 cm...turned out to be something else attatched to the cyst.

Currently I have one which is relatively small...and it bugs me to know that it's there. Plus the bloating is constant and I sometimes get naseaus.

But! yours takes the cake with having to lie down. Be sure to pressure your doctor for some answers. He/she may not realize how problematic this cyst is...

Hi, the wait and see approach is normal but since it is causing problems i would suggest it being removed especially since you have a history of chocolate cysts. (((HUGS)))

usually if a cyts is 6cm or larger, they surgically remove it. Thats pretty big. Ive had countless cysts since i was 14, I an now 31 and get them ALL the time, and have had many cysts removed, and about to have an endometrioma removed.
My best advice, if i were in your position, i would wait a short time since this is affecting you so badly, maybe no more than a month, and if it has not gone down, talk to the dr. about surgery. While surgery is not fun, either is the cyst! or you could remove it now and get it over like @whyme suggested. In any case, feel better!

Thanks for all the comments! I go see my doctor on Monday for a follow-up, and I think I have a better idea of what to talk about with my doctor now.
