Empty Nests Support Group
Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of depression and loneliness that parents/other guardian relatives feel when one or more of their children leave home. Empty nest syndrome has become more prevalent in modern times, as the extended family is becoming less common than in past generations, and the elderly are left living by themselves.
Hi. Just joined. My youngest daughter (2 girls) just moved away 2 weeks ago. I'm in a black hole. I'm a single mom. Now I'm just a single I guess. This feels so awful! Hole in my heart kind of awful. Both of my girls are amazing people, lovely, mature, going down good paths. Oldest is a senior at a really good college. Youngest is headed towards a life of missions and ministry. But both live more than 2 hours away from me in opposite directions. We are all 3 very connected which I am so grateful for. But I am here alone. I'm not super close to my extended family. I have friends. But that does not make up for the desperately overpowering void of not being hands-on day to day mom anymore. I thought this would be easier than this. I always wanted to be a mom and a wife. The wife thing flew out the window several years ago, so my whole world has centered around being the most excellent mom I could possibly be. Now what? I'm really heart broken. I know I'm not the first to go through this, and that is why I searched for this group. My friends are compassionate. I attend a great church group. I have a business that's growing. And in the midst of that there is this heavy weight just sitting on my chest. The weight of mourning the end of the dream. It was my happy life-long goal and dream and one I did well. Now what? Ugh. I'm in a hole.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

It's been some time since my last post...sorry. I've been going through a challenging time with the sale of my home, purchase of a condo and my adult asperger son that lives with me. I've had days where I couldn't get out of bed, days where I stayed in my pj's and days where all I managed to do was eat, drink fluids and take care of my Sweet Mia kitty. Sweet Mia came to me from a shelter about...

lost your daughters, they just don't live with you....the love and connection you wrote of is in all three of your hearts and will be forever. You've done your "Mom Job" well! Find your peace and fill your empty heart with being a part of their next stage of life...as a friend, to guide as they move into adulthood.
My son left home a year and a month ago...I am a single parent, and I have no business, no family or a church to support me in my journey. At the moment, I'm feeling quiet depressed, but I know I've done what I can for my son, he will make his own decisions and fall...I have no grand hope for my son as you have for your daughters. I can only pray one day he will be happy, find someone to love him so he won't be alone in the world when I die.
We all walk our own path towards creating a life for ourselves after our kids have gone, the empty place in our home, well as with a death and grieving seems to lessen, yet still remains...I guess acceptance of what is, and seeking happiness, to find joy wherever it can be found, and feeling gratitude...anyway, that is how I manage to get though my day.
I've been advised to take on a cat or dog from a rescue, as there are thousands languishing needing love, and they do give you that special someone to nurture again, but I don't want the chores or worry at the moment. It's something to consider if you enjoy routine and cleaning etc. though - I watch all the dog rescue videos on youtube meanwhile - Hope for Paws and Soi Dog in Thailand particularly need adopters, if you want to go down that route.
Good luck and best wishes - we all know how you feel! xxx
