Empty Nests Support Group
Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of depression and loneliness that parents/other guardian relatives feel when one or more of their children leave home. Empty nest syndrome has become more prevalent in modern times, as the extended family is becoming less common than in past generations, and the elderly are left living by themselves.
I can't tell you that it has totally gone away for me and it has now been 54 weeks. Isn't it strange that I know how long it has been since my son moved out. It is better but I still miss him every day. I still wish he would walk in the door. I wish I could talk to him every day. My husband and I go to more movies on the weekend, we have more family get-togethers, we go to sporting events. I think it was worse for me b/c I really have no friends to go out with or talk to. I pretty much gave it all up for my son and being supportive of him but I should have changed that as he got older. I wonder sometimes if it would make it easier to have other women to share my feelings with. I can't share it with my sisters as they have serious issues within their families--much more serious than my son moving out. I think part of the problem for me too is just worry -- not knowing anything about his roommates, not knowing the type of people he is meeting, just hoping that he doesn't get tempted into something bad. I pray every morning and evening specifically and then I find myself praying for him during the day. I just sometimes miss him even when I just see his picture. I also miss our dog -- we had to put her down just 3 months after my son moved out. One night in Chick-Fil-A I saw a dog in a car going through the drive through. I laughed and then I cried. I do the same thing with matters about my son. I know I'm probably not helping you really but I want you to know that you aren't alone. It is really better now than it was. Used to be I cried every day. Now I can go maybe 3 or 4 days without crying. I still feel empty sometimes, feel like I have no purpose. I guess I'm just trying to say it hasn't gone away but I have better days. I hope the same for you.
